GE Gas Dryer Igniter Replacement — When Your Gas Dryer Won't Heat
The igniter in a GE gas dryer is a ceramic element that glows orange-hot to ignite the gas flowing from the burner valve. When the igniter fails, the gas valve never opens (a safety feature — the valve requires the igniter to draw a specific current before releasing gas). The result: your dryer tumbles normally but produces zero heat.
How the GE Gas Dryer Ignition System Works
The ignition sequence follows a precise order:
- Control board sends power to the igniter
- Igniter heats to approximately 1,800 degrees F (glows bright orange)
- As the igniter heats, its resistance drops, allowing more current to flow
- When current through the igniter reaches a specific threshold (approximately 3.2-3.6 amps), the gas valve solenoids open
- Gas flows across the glowing igniter and ignites
- The flame sensor detects the flame and the system enters normal operation
If the igniter cannot reach the required current threshold — either because it is cracked, has high resistance from aging, or is completely broken — the gas valve never opens. This is a safety feature: the system will never release gas without a functioning igniter hot enough to ignite it.

Igniter vs Gas Valve Solenoid
Two components can prevent gas flow, and they produce nearly identical symptoms:
Igniter failure — the igniter does not glow at all, or glows but not brightly enough to reach the current threshold. The gas valve stays closed. No clicking sound from the solenoids.
Gas valve solenoid failure — the igniter glows normally (bright orange), but the solenoids do not open the gas valve. You can see the igniter glow through the peephole or inspection port on the lower front panel. If the igniter glows for 60-90 seconds and then shuts off without gas igniting, the solenoids are the problem, not the igniter.
Diagnosis
- Start a heat cycle
- Look through the lower front panel peephole (small opening near the bottom of the dryer)
- No glow at all = igniter is broken (open circuit). Replace igniter.
- Weak glow (dim orange) = igniter is aging and cannot reach the current threshold. Replace igniter.
- Bright orange glow, no gas ignition = solenoids are not opening. Replace gas valve solenoid coils.
- Bright glow, gas ignites, flame goes out after a few seconds = flame sensor issue or intermittent solenoid failure.

Step-by-Step Replacement
Safety
Unplug the dryer. Shut off the gas supply valve behind the dryer (quarter-turn valve — handle perpendicular to the pipe = off). Wait 5 minutes for any residual gas to dissipate before working near the burner assembly.
Accessing the Igniter
Remove the lower front access panel (2 screws at the bottom, or spring clips). The burner assembly and igniter are visible at the lower right area of the dryer. The igniter is mounted next to the gas burner tube, positioned so its glowing surface faces the gas port.
Removing the Old Igniter
Disconnect the igniter wire connector (a 2-pin plug). Remove the single mounting screw holding the igniter bracket to the burner assembly. Carefully slide the igniter out — ceramic igniters are extremely fragile. Do not touch the ceramic element with bare hands; oils from skin can create hot spots that cause premature failure.
Installing the New Igniter
Handle the new igniter by the bracket only — never touch the ceramic element. Position the igniter so the glowing surface faces the gas port. Secure with the mounting screw. Connect the wire plug.
Testing
Restore gas supply (turn the valve handle parallel to the pipe). Plug in the dryer. Start a heat cycle and observe through the peephole. The igniter should glow bright orange within 30 seconds. Gas should ignite within 60-90 seconds of the igniter glowing. The flame should be a steady blue with yellow tips.
Igniter Life Expectancy
GE gas dryer igniters typically last 5-8 years. Each ignition cycle stresses the ceramic — it heats from room temperature to 1,800 degrees F and cools back down, causing thermal expansion and contraction that eventually cracks the ceramic. Households running the dryer daily will see shorter igniter life than occasional users.

Gas Safety
If you smell gas at any point during the repair, stop immediately. Turn off the gas supply. Do not operate any electrical switches. Ventilate the area and contact your gas utility. A gas leak during igniter replacement indicates a damaged gas valve or loose connection that must be addressed before the dryer can be used.
