The short answer
A GE dishwasher that leaves water in the tub is most often blocked on the plumbing side rather than broken: a disposer knockout plug left in on a new install, a clogged air gap, or a drain hose without a high loop. The sump filter is the commonest in-machine cause and it is an owner clean. Only a failed drain pump or check valve is a service call.
What you observe
- Standing water above the filter at the end of every cycle — The machine never drained rather than drained slowly.
- It has never drained since it was installed — Points straight at the disposer knockout plug.
- Water bubbling out of the air gap on the sink — The air gap or the hose beyond it is blocked.
- Dirty sink water appearing in the tub — No high loop in the drain hose, so waste siphons back.
- NEAR MISS — water on the floor rather than in the tub — That is a leak, not a drainage fault. Different page.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- Disposer knockout plug never removed at installation — First whenever the machine has never drained. The disposer inlet ships sealed and must be punched out before the hose is fitted; a fitter who misses it leaves a dishwasher that pumps against a solid wall.
- Sump filter clogged with food debris — Second, and the commonest cause on a machine that used to work. It twists out by hand on this platform, which makes it the first thing to actually touch.
- Air gap or drain hose blocked, or no high loop fitted — Third: a blocked air gap shows as water on the worktop, while a missing high loop shows as sink water siphoning back into the tub.
- Drain pump or check valve failed — Last, and the only one that is a real repair. Its tell is a clean filter, clear plumbing and a machine that hums at the drain without moving any water.
Check in this order, and why
- Ask whether it has ever drained properly — Never means installation; used to means filter or plumbing.
- Run the sink and the disposer, then retest — Rules out a household waste blockage for nothing.
- Remove and rinse the sump filter — The likeliest in-machine cause and an owner job.
- Look at the air gap and the hose routing under the sink — Left here because it needs the cupboard emptied.
What an owner can safely check
- Bail the standing water out of the tub — A jug and a sponge. You need the sump visible.
Tools: jug, spongeAbout 15 min
- Twist out the sump filter and rinse it thoroughly — Clear the mesh and the coarse screen, then refit and lock it.
About 15 min
- Run the disposer and the tap, then start a short cycle — Confirms the household waste is clear before blaming the machine.
About 20 min
- Lift the air gap cap and clear any debris in it — Only if your installation has one on the worktop.
About 10 min
- STOP HERE if the next step means the pump or the kickplate wiring — Drain-pump work sits on live terminals behind the kickplate.

Safety
Switch off the breaker before removing the kickplate or reaching into the sump; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the junction box behind the kickplate is a live mains connection. Never put your hand into a disposer, even switched off — use tongs. Broken glass is common in a blocked sump, so wear gloves and empty the tub before you feel around in it. Do not run the machine with the filter removed.
When to call a technician
Call when the filter is clean, the sink drains freely, the air gap is clear and the machine still hums at the drain phase without shifting water — the pump or the check valve is then the answer. Call a plumber instead if the sink is also slow or the knockout plug is still in place, because the fault is in the plumbing rather than the appliance. Call immediately if the breaker trips when the drain phase begins.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the brand and the appliance class, not for one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, that page is the more specific answer and you should start there. Deliberately absent: pump and filter part identifiers, hose diameters, high-loop heights and fault-code meanings, all of which differ between the built-in, slimline and portable families and between installations.
