What poor cleaning usually means on a GE
GE has built dishwashers that grind food and dishwashers that filter it, and the ranking is different for each. On a grinder machine, loading and incoming water temperature lead. On a filter machine, an uncleaned filter leads instead. Look into the sump before you do anything else, because that one observation decides which of the two lists below applies to your machine.
What you are seeing
- The upper rack is consistently worse than the lower rack.
- Gritty deposits inside cups and bowls after a full cycle.
- A white film building on glassware over weeks.
- Plastics and cup bottoms still wet at the end.
- Not this fault: Water left standing in the sump - that is a drainage fault.
- Not this fault: A grinding noise during the cycle - read the noise page; something hard is in the machine.
Most likely causes, in GE order
- Unknown filtration type - the wrong list is being worked — Why ranked: First because it decides everything below it. A filter machine and a grinder machine fail for different reasons and need different maintenance.
- Loading blocks a spray arm from turning — Why ranked: Second on either machine. A stalled arm leaves an entire rack unwashed, which is why one rack looks far worse than the other.
- Filter not cleaned, on the machines that have one — Why ranked: Ranked here rather than first because it only applies to part of the GE fleet - but where it applies, it dominates.
- Incoming water not hot at the start of the cycle — Why ranked: A machine that fills cold never dissolves detergent properly, and the whole cycle underperforms without anything being broken.
- Detergent or rinse aid wrong for the water, or spray arm holes limed — Why ranked: Last. These show as film and wetness rather than as food left behind, which separates them from the causes above.
What to check, in order
- Look into the sump under the lower spray arm. — Because: A removable filter cylinder or a fixed screen tells you which machine you have, and therefore which list to work.
- Load the machine as usual, then spin both arms by hand. — Because: It reproduces rank two under real conditions, which an empty machine never shows.
- If there is a filter, twist it out and inspect it. — Because: Rank three is a visual answer, and on those machines it is usually the whole story.
- Run the kitchen tap hot before starting a cycle and note how long it takes. — Because: It quantifies rank four with no instrument beyond your hand.
Checks you can do safely
- Pull the lower rack and look into the sump. Note whether there is a filter cylinder that twists out or a fixed screen. — N: 1 — Tools: Torch — Time: quick
- Load as you normally do, then spin each spray arm by hand through a full turn and note what stops it. — N: 2 — Tools: None — Time: quick

- Stop rule: Stop here. Removing the lower arm, the sump cover or the grinding chamber is service work on a hard-wired machine.
Before you open anything
Safety
Switch off the dishwasher breaker before removing the toe kick or any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. These machines are commonly hard-wired, so pulling the machine forward does not isolate it. Broken glass hides in a sump - use a brush and a torch, not bare fingers. Never mix dishwasher detergent with bleach or another cleaner in the tub.
When this becomes a service call
Results stay poor with the arms free, the filter clean and a hot fill confirmed. An arm turns freely but water plainly is not reaching the upper rack. There is a grinding noise, which means something hard has reached the pump. Soil returns to the tub during the cycle, pointing at a drain or check-valve fault.
