The short answer
On Forte a freezer that runs without holding temperature is most often a stalled defrost leaving ice across the cold-air path, not a failed compressor. Ranked that way because the door weight and the gasket do more of the work here than any electronic part does.
What you observe
- Heavy frost on the walls or on the packages — Humid air getting in, or a defrost cycle that is not happening.
- Food at the door is thawing while the back is fine — A seal or an airflow problem rather than a refrigeration one.
- NEAR MISS: the cabinet is silent and nothing runs at all — That is a power, thermostat or start-relay fault and it is a different page. Check the outlet and the breaker first.
Causes, most likely first on Forte
- A thick ice build-up on the evaporator or the walls — First on a fitted machine, which is only ever as good as its installation. Ice is an insulator. Once it is thick enough it stops the plate or the coil reaching the air at all, so the compartment warms while the machine works harder than ever.
- The condenser coil or the ventilation gap is choked — Second: on a fitted machine this is the next thing genuinely yours to check. A freezer cannot get cold inside unless it can get rid of heat outside. Dust on the coil, or a cabinet pushed tight against a wall, produces continuous running with nothing to show for it.
- The lid or door is not sealing — Third. A hinge out of adjustment, a gasket that has taken a set, or a basket standing proud of the rim leaves a gap that never lets the cabinet get ahead.
- The sealed system: compressor, start relay or lost refrigerant — Last, and it is the reason the order above matters. The compressor hums briefly and cuts out, or runs with no cold at all.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at the thickness of ice on the plate or the walls — Ice thick enough to hide the plate is a confirmed cause and an owner fix.
- Look at the coil and at the clearance around the cabinet — A visible dust blanket is a confirmed cause and it is owner work.
- Close the door on a sheet of paper at several points round the rim — Frost at a single point on the rim is a located gap, not a general problem.

- Empty the cabinet and defrost it fully with the door open — Never chip ice off with anything metal: the plate is thin and it punctures.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off with a knife, a screwdriver or any metal tool: the evaporator plate is thin, a puncture releases refrigerant and it ends the life of the cabinet.
When to call a technician
Call once the seal, the load, the frost and the coil have all been dealt with and the cabinet still will not hold temperature. Call immediately if the compressor hums and cuts out repeatedly, or if you can see oil around the compressor or the tubing, because oil outside the tubing means the system is open. Discard anything that has thawed and stayed above temperature rather than refreezing it.
