The short answer
On Forno a freezer that runs without holding temperature is most often a condenser coil that can no longer shed heat, not a failed compressor. Ranked that way because a built-in cabinet breathes through whatever gap the joinery left it, and that gap is fixed for the life of the kitchen.
What you observe
- Food at the door is thawing while the back is fine — A seal or an airflow problem rather than a refrigeration one.
- Ice cream is soft but meat is still frozen solid — A cabinet sitting just above temperature rather than one that has failed outright.
- NEAR MISS: the cabinet is silent and nothing runs at all — That is a power, thermostat or start-relay fault and it is a different page. Check the outlet and the breaker first.
Causes, most likely first on Forno
- The condenser coil or the ventilation gap is choked — First on a fitted machine, which is only ever as good as its installation. A freezer cannot get cold inside unless it can get rid of heat outside. Dust on the coil, or a cabinet pushed tight against a wall, produces continuous running with nothing to show for it.
- The lid or door is not sealing — Second: on a fitted machine this is the next thing genuinely yours to check. A hinge out of adjustment, a gasket that has taken a set, or a basket standing proud of the rim leaves a gap that never lets the cabinet get ahead. Frost building around one spot on the rim is the cabinet telling you exactly where the gap is.
- It is overloaded, over-filled or badly loaded — Third. Cold air has to move.
- The sealed system: compressor, start relay or lost refrigerant — Last, and it is the reason the order above matters. The compressor hums briefly and cuts out, or runs with no cold at all.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at the coil and at the clearance around the cabinet — A visible dust blanket is a confirmed cause and it is owner work.
- Close the door on a sheet of paper at several points round the rim — Frost at a single point on the rim is a located gap, not a general problem.
- Look at how full it is and whether anything blocks the vents or the evaporator plate — It is free, it is common, and it explains a warm cabinet with healthy hardware.

- Vacuum the coil and open a clear gap behind and to each side — Brush the loose debris off first, then vacuum.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off with a knife, a screwdriver or any metal tool: the evaporator plate is thin, a puncture releases refrigerant and it ends the life of the cabinet.
When to call a technician
Call once the seal, the load, the frost and the coil have all been dealt with and the cabinet still will not hold temperature. Call immediately if the compressor hums and cuts out repeatedly, or if you can see oil around the compressor or the tubing, because oil outside the tubing means the system is open. Discard anything that has thawed and stayed above temperature rather than refreezing it.
