The short answer
On a compact freezer the commonest reason the lid or door will not seal is that something inside is holding it open. These cabinets are packed to the brim by design, and a package standing a fraction above the rim keeps the seal off for a week without anybody noticing. Check the packing and the level of the cabinet before you look at the gasket.
What you are seeing
- A package or basket edge standing above the rim — Note: Whatever is proud of the rim is holding the lid off, and that is the top cause on this cabinet.
- A paper strip pulls out freely along one edge — Note: Either something is under the lid at that point or the cabinet is not standing level.

- Close the lid on a strip of paper at four points on each side — Why: The pattern of where it pulls free separates packing, levelling and gasket problems.
- Press the gasket with a thumb and see whether it springs back — Why: A strip that stays flattened has taken a set, which is the one cause here that adjustment cannot fix.
Checks you can do safely
- Repack the cabinet so nothing stands above the rim, moving anything oversized to another appliance or a different orientation. — Tools: none — Time: twenty minutes

Unplug the cabinet before working on a hinge, a lid counterbalance or any panel, and support a chest lid before disturbing its hinge: a lid counterbalance is under tension and the lid is heavy. Keep a hair dryer moving, on its lowest heat and well back from the liner, which deforms permanently at low temperature. Never chip ice from the rim or the liner with a tool, because refrigerant tubing is bonded into the cabinet wall behind it. Get help before moving a loaded cabinet, and empty it first. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel.
