The short answer
Ice is the first thing to suffer when a cabinet is marginal, so check the freezer temperature before you look at the ice maker at all. If the freezer is not at 0 °F (−18 °C), the ice problem is a cooling problem wearing a disguise — and no adjustment to the ice maker will fix it.
What you observe
- No ice at all, with the freezer soft to the touch — A cooling shortfall, not an ice-maker fault.
- Small, hollow or misshapen cubes — Not enough water reaching the mould, or not enough time in the freeze.
- Ice fused into one block in the bin — Partial thawing and refreezing — usually a door or temperature problem.
- Production fell off after the cabinet was moved — Level and clearance both changed, and both affect ice.
- NEAR MISS — clattering during harvest — That is the cycle working, not a fault; the noise page covers it.
Causes, most likely first on this cabinet
- Freezer not cold enough to freeze ice properly — First, and the reason this page starts with a thermometer. A compact cabinet that is short of clearance, in too warm a room or packed solid runs warm, and ice is the first output to fail while frozen food still feels acceptable.
- Water supply or reservoir not delivering — Second. An empty reservoir, a closed valve or a kinked fill line gives small, hollow or absent cubes, and it is easy to check without tools.
- The cabinet not level, or the bin and arm out of position — Third. An unlevel cabinet fills moulds unevenly, and a shut-off arm or a bin pushed out of place stops production entirely with nothing broken.
- Ice fused or bridged in the bin — Last. Once cubes fuse, the mechanism stalls and production stops — clearing the bin restores it, but the fusing itself points back at temperature or the door.
Check in this order, and why
- Measure the freezer with a thermometer — First: at 0 °F (−18 °C) the cabinet can make ice, and below that standard it cannot.
- Check the reservoir, valve and fill line — Second, because no water is the commonest non-temperature cause.
- Empty the bin and clear any fused block — Next, since a stalled mechanism looks exactly like a failure.
- Confirm the cabinet is level and the shut-off arm is free — Last of the owner checks, and it costs nothing.

Before you reach into the ice compartment
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or reaching into the harvest area — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a mechanism can move when a cycle resumes. Never chip at ice with a metal tool: the mould and the evaporator behind it are thin, and puncturing either ends the cabinet.
When to call a technician
Call when the freezer holds 0 °F (−18 °C), the reservoir is full, the bin is clear and the cabinet is level, and there is still no ice — that points at the module or the valve. Call when the freezer cannot reach 0 °F (−18 °C) at all, because the underlying fault is cooling rather than ice. Call promptly for any water escaping from a fill line, and on a compact cabinet weigh the quote against replacement.
