Electrical symptoms on an Equator Advanced Appliances unit are not performance complaints and they do not improve with one more load. A tripping circuit, a hot plug, a burning smell and a tingle from the cabinet each indicate current going somewhere it should not. The list below exists to tell you who to call and what to record, because every cause is confirmed on live terminals in a machine full of water.
Symptoms, including the ones that mean something else
- A hot-plastic or fishy smell while the machine runs — That is overheated insulation, and it does not resolve itself.
- The breaker or the GFCI trips when the machine runs — Note the phase: fill, wash, heat, drain or spin.
- A tingle from the cabinet, the drum or a nearby tap — Any sensation of current is an earth-path fault and must not be repeated as a test.
- NEAR MISS: a static click from a dry laundry floor — Static does not trip protection and does not repeat when the machine is wet.
Causes, most likely first
- Water reaching wiring, the cord entry or a connection — Top of the list: a slow leak wets a connector and the machine starts tripping, so a tolerated leak becomes an electrical fault.
- Plug, outlet or cord connection overheating — Second most likely here: laundry sockets are often old, shared and inaccessible, which is why this is both the most common electrical fault and the easiest to see.
- Pump motor failing — Less often, third: a drain pump with a breaking-down winding trips as it starts, which puts the fault at the end of the wash rather than at the spin.
What to test first, second, third
- Look for water or staining under and behind the machine — A wet base and a tripping circuit are one fault rather than two, and the leak has to be fixed in the same visit.
- With the power off, inspect the plug, outlet and visible cord — Discolouration, melted plastic or a cord crushed behind the machine are reasons to stop using it entirely.
- Listen for which action was starting when the trip happened — Fill, wash, drain and spin are four circuits, and naming one removes three.
