The short answer
Before assuming an Emerson appliance is finished, rule out three free things: a tripped outlet or breaker, the control set to off, and showroom or demo mode left enabled. Each of them presents as a dead appliance. The ranking below is ordered for what is actually reachable before a technician is needed.
What owners actually observe
- Nothing at all: no light, no fan, no display — Supply first: the outlet, the plug, the breaker or a tripped protection device.
- A click every few minutes, then silence — The compressor trying to start and its overload cutting in.
- The display shows a showroom or demo indicator — A mode that keeps the lights and display alive while the cooling is disabled.
- A faint hum with no cooling and a warm compressor — The compressor is being asked to start and cannot.
- NEAR MISS: an interior light that stays off while everything else works — A lamp or a door switch, not the appliance refusing to run.
The ranking that matters
- No power at the outlet, or a tripped protection device — First, and by a clear margin: the outlet behind a refrigerator is never inspected, and a tripped breaker or a protection device that has opened presents as a completely dead appliance. Prove the outlet with a lamp before touching anything else.
- Compressor start relay or overload failed — Second: it is an inexpensive part, and the symptom is specific enough to be worth reporting exactly as you hear it.
- Control set to off, or showroom and demo mode enabled — Third in order: most builds have a setting that stops cooling while keeping the lights and display alive, and a unit bought as a floor model often arrives with it enabled.
What to test first, second, third
- Prove the outlet with a lamp and check the breaker — Reset a tripped breaker once.
- Listen at the back: a click every few minutes with no run — That pattern is a start fault at the compressor rather than a control fault.
- Check the temperature setting and look for a demo or showroom indicator — The manual gives the key combination; it is usually a long press on two keys.
