The short answer
On a twin-tub, work out which side is dead before anything else: the wash tub and the spin tub have separate timers and separate interlocks, and one failing tells you nothing about the other. A wash side that does nothing usually means its timer has not been wound; a spin side that does nothing usually means the spin lid is not closed on its interlock.
What you observe
- The wash tub does nothing, the spin side works — The wash timer, not the machine. They are independent of one another.
- The spin tub does nothing, the wash side works — Almost always the spin lid interlock rather than the motor.
- A timer ticks but nothing moves — The timer is running and the drive is not — that is a real fault on that side.
- Neither side does anything at all — Supply, cord or outlet. Only then is it a whole-machine problem.
- NEAR MISS — both sides run but nothing drains — That is a drain hose or pump fault and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Wash timer not wound, or worn — First. A twin-tub wash side runs on a wound mechanical timer, and a machine that is not set simply does nothing — no light, no tone, no explanation. Where the timer has genuinely worn, it usually works through part of its travel and not the rest, which is a distinctive symptom.
- Spin lid interlock not made — Second, and the reason the spin side is dead far more often than the wash side. The spin lid must be closed and latched for the interlock to allow the motor to run, and a lid that is warped or a catch that is bent will look shut and not be.
- Confusion between the two sides — Third, and worth naming plainly: owners report the machine as dead when only one half is. Establishing which side fails is the whole diagnosis, and it costs nothing.
- Motor, capacitor and wiring faults — Last. A timer that ticks with no movement points here, and on a twin-tub each side has its own drive, so a fault on one leaves the other working perfectly.
Check in this order, and why
- Test each side independently — This single step converts a vague complaint into a specific one.
- Wind the wash timer fully and listen for it ticking — Checked next, because an unwound timer is the most common wash-side cause.
- Close the spin lid firmly and listen for the interlock — The spin side will not run without it, and a bent catch is easy to miss.
- Note whether a timer runs while the tub stays still — That combination is the end of owner diagnosis and points at the drive on that side.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a spin motor capacitor holds it well after the tub stops. Never defeat the spin lid interlock: a spin basket turning with the lid open is the most dangerous thing on this machine. Wait for the basket to stop on its own rather than braking it by hand.
When to call a technician
Call when a timer runs and its tub does not move, which points at the drive or capacitor on that side. Call when the spin interlock is damaged, since it is a safety device and should not be improvised. On a twin-tub at this price, weigh a repair quote against a replacement before booking — and never run the machine with an interlock that has been bypassed, whatever the reason.
