- Feet, levelling or contact with a neighbouring machine — First, and by a clear margin: a dryer stacked on, or jammed against, a washer transmits every vibration into the other cabinet and into the floor.
- Drum rollers, glides or bearings worn — Next in order: on many platforms they are the defined wear part and they are replaced as a set, which is the normal mid-life dryer repair.
- An object loose in the drum, the blower or the lint path — Third in order: coins, buttons, pen caps and underwire pass the drum seal and end up in the blower, where they rattle at speed and eventually break the wheel.
Where to start, and what follows
- Rock each corner by hand and check all four feet — Any movement is a levelling fault and it is free to correct.
- Turn the empty drum slowly by hand and listen — Roughness, a catch once per turn, or a groan all point at the drum supports.
- Run the machine empty for a minute and listen for rattles — A rattle that tracks the blower rather than the drum is an object in the housing.
