In one paragraph
Water inside or under an Elica unit is usually the appliance failing to get rid of its own defrost water rather than a plumbing leak. A blocked defrost drain puts water under the crisper drawers and then on the floor, and it is the first thing to check. Because these appliances are boxed into joinery by the kitchen fitter, the drain route and the levelling come before the water lines.
How the fault presents
- Water around the filter housing — A cartridge not seated, a failed housing seal, or a poor aftermarket fit.
- Water at the back, near the valve or the line — A supply fitting, the inlet valve or the filter head rather than the drain.
- Condensation and frost around the door opening — Humid air getting in: the gasket rather than the water circuit.
- Water on the floor at the front — Overflow from inside, or condensation running off a gasket that is not sealing.
- NEAR MISS: drips from the drain pan area during a defrost — The pan is supposed to catch and evaporate that water.
The ranking that matters
- Defrost drain blocked with debris or ice — First, and by a clear margin: it is the most common leak on this appliance by a wide margin, and on many builds it is reachable from inside the freezer. Water under the crisper drawers is almost always this.
- The appliance is not level, or the drain pan is displaced — Second most likely here: a cabinet tipped forward sends defrost water the wrong way, and a pan knocked out of position when the unit was moved spills instead of evaporating.
- Door gasket letting humid air in — Third: the water then appears at the front or around the opening rather than under the drawers, which is how it is distinguished from a drain fault.
Check in this order
- Find the drain opening in the freezer and check it flows — A small amount of warm water poured in should disappear rather than pool.
- Check the cabinet is level and the drain pan sits square — A slight backward tilt is usually intended; forward is not.
- Test the gasket with a slip of paper at several points — Easy withdrawal means a gap, and frost near that gap confirms it.
Owner-side checks, step by step
- Dry everything and note where water appears first — Inside under the drawers, at the front, or behind: three different causes.
Tools: paper towelAbout 20 min
- Empty the bottom of the freezer and look for an ice sheet — Ice in the base is the defrost drain backing up.
Tools: torchAbout 20 min
- Find the defrost drain opening and check it flows — A little warm water poured in should disappear, not pool.
Tools: jug of warm waterAbout 25 min
- STOP HERE before removing the evaporator panel or a plumbed joint — The drain tube, the inlet valve and the ice-maker line sit behind panels beside mains wiring, with the water still under pressure.

Safety
Water on the floor next to a powered appliance is a shock and slip risk before it is a plumbing problem: switch the appliance off, then mop. Close the water supply before touching any fitting. allowlist:unplug-before-service
When this becomes a service call
Call when the drain has been cleared or cannot be reached, the cabinet is level, the gasket seals, the filter is correctly fitted and water still appears. What remains is the drain tube, the inlet valve or a line behind a panel.
