Water inside or under an Elica cabinet is usually the appliance failing to get rid of its own defrost water rather than a plumbing leak. A blocked defrost drain puts water under the crisper drawers and then on the floor, and it is the first thing to check. Because these appliances are boxed into joinery by the kitchen fitter, the drain route and the levelling come before the water lines.
Symptoms, including the ones that mean something else
- A damp patch that only appears after a defrost cycle — Timing that points straight at the drain.
- Water around the filter housing — A cartridge not seated, a failed housing seal, or a poor aftermarket fit.
- Water on the floor at the front — Overflow from inside, or condensation running off a gasket that is not sealing.
- Water under the crisper drawers inside the cabinet — The classic blocked defrost drain.
- NEAR MISS: water under the unit that came from the dishwasher or sink nearby — Dry the floor and watch it: in a kitchen run, neighbours get blamed for each other constantly.
Causes, most likely first
- The appliance is not level, or the drain pan is displaced — First, and by a clear margin: a cabinet tipped forward sends defrost water the wrong way, and a pan knocked out of position when the unit was moved spills instead of evaporating.
- Defrost drain blocked with debris or ice — Next in order: it is the most common leak on this appliance by a wide margin, and on many builds it is reachable from inside the freezer.
- Door gasket letting humid air in — Third in order: a gasket that does not seal admits warm humid air, which condenses and runs, and which also feeds frost that melts later.
The order of checks, and why
- Check the cabinet is level and the drain pan sits square — A slight backward tilt is usually intended; forward is not.
- Find the drain opening in the freezer and check it flows — A small amount of warm water poured in should disappear rather than pool.
- Test the gasket with a slip of paper at several points — Easy withdrawal means a gap, and frost near that gap confirms it.

- Dry everything and note where water appears first — Inside under the drawers, at the front, or behind: three different causes.
