The short answer
Stop and disconnect the machine if you smell burning, see scorching, feel any shock, or find the breaker tripping repeatedly. A protected outlet or breaker that opens when the wash heats usually means the heating element is leaking to earth.
Stop immediately if you notice
- Any tingle or shock from the cabinet or door — Isolate at the breaker now.
- A burning or hot-plastic smell — Stop and disconnect.
- Scorching at the plug or the outlet — An electrician, not a technician.
- The breaker tripping at the heating stage — Often an element leaking to earth.
- A protected outlet that will not hold — Something is leaking current.
- Not this fault: a warm cabinet after a hot wash — Normal.
What produces these signs
- Heating element failed and leaking to earth — First, and the classic cause of a trip when heating starts.
- Water reaching wiring or a connector — Second, and often from an untreated leak.
- Motor or capacitor failure — Third, and it usually smells.
- Cord or outlet overheating at a loose connection — Fourth.
- Wiring chafed against a moving part — Fifth.
- Appliance not earthed correctly at the installation — Last, and an electrician’s finding.
If you see a warning sign
- Switch off at the breaker rather than pulling the plug — Never reach across water for a plug.
- Close both supply taps — It removes the water side entirely.
- Do not restart the machine to reproduce the fault — A second run is how a warning becomes an incident.
- Look at the plug and outlet for heat or scorching — That finding points at an electrician.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never reach across a wet floor to unplug a machine - isolate at the breaker instead. Never keep resetting a breaker or a protected outlet that trips when the machine runs, and never use an appliance that has given anybody a shock.
When to call
Call immediately for shocks, burning smells, scorching or repeated trips, and leave the machine isolated until somebody has looked at it. Use an electrician for the outlet, the cord, the circuit and the earthing, and an appliance technician for the machine itself. Say plainly what you felt or smelled, because it sets the priority.
