The short answer
A door that will not lock is usually a worn latch or a hinge that has dropped, both of which come from heavy use rather than defect. A door that leaks is usually a bellows torn or fouled at the lower front, where debris collects and loads catch.

- The cycle will not start and the lock never engages — A latch or interlock fault; the machine is refusing for a reason.
- The door stays locked at the end of the cycle — A release fault, and the drum may still be hot.
- Water escaping at the lower front of the door — The bellows, and the most common leak point on a front loader.
- The handle feels loose or pulls without latching — Handle mechanism worn from angled pulling.
- The door sits low against the frame — Hinge wear from users leaning on an open door.

- Latch and striker worn from repeated heavy use — First on a commercial machine, and the usual reason a door no longer locks.
- Bellows torn or perforated at the lower front — Second, and it follows items caught in the seal or bleach contact.
- Hinge dropped so the door no longer presents the latch squarely — Third, and it produces intermittent locking.
- Debris trapped in the bellows fold — Fourth: coins, clips and detergent sludge collect there and hold the seal open.
- Interlock mechanism failing electrically — Fifth, and it presents as a machine that refuses to start with a visually perfect door.
- Handle mechanism broken internally — Last, and usually obvious by feel.
The order to work through
- Decide whether you have a lock fault or a leak — They share the word door and nothing else.
- Wipe out the bellows fold and inspect it all the way round — Debris and tears are visible when the fold is opened by hand.
- Close the door and watch where the latch meets the striker — Misalignment shows immediately.
- Note whether the fault is every time or occasional — Intermittent points at wear and alignment; constant points at a component.

The door lock is a safety device
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The interlock stays exactly as built: it is never held, packed, taped or worked around, because it is what keeps a drum of hot water closed. If a door remains locked at the end of a cycle, let the machine cool and call rather than forcing it.
When to call
Call as soon as a door fails to lock reliably, because a commercial washer out of service is expensive by the hour. Call as well for any bellows that is cut or perforated, for a door that has dropped, and immediately for a door that stays locked with water inside. Do not attempt to open a locked door on a machine that has not drained and cooled.
