The short answer
Heat escaping at the door is nearly always the gasket or the hinges, and both are visible without tools. A door that locks or refuses to unlock is a different fault entirely: that is the self-clean lock mechanism, and forcing it is the one thing that turns a repair into a replacement.
What you notice
- The top edge of the door is uncomfortably hot — Heat is passing the seal at that point.
- A visible gap between the door and the frame when closed — Hinge wear or a distorted gasket.
- Food browning unevenly toward one side — Heat leaking on that side, pulling the cavity temperature down.
- The door will not close without being pushed hard — Hinge springs tired or the gasket displaced.
- The door is locked after a self-clean cycle — A lock mechanism that has not released; do not force it.

- Lift the door gently at the handle and watch the hinges — Movement means hinge wear rather than a seal fault.
- If the door is locked, run and complete a normal cycle before anything else — That sometimes releases a lock that timed out.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Oven doors are heavy and their hinges are strongly sprung: never release a hinge with the door attached, and never force a self-clean lock. Let the cavity cool completely before any inspection; a self-clean cycle leaves surfaces hot long after the cycle ends.
When to call
Call when the gasket is hard or torn, when the paper test shows a persistent gap after cleaning, or when the hinges let the door move at the handle. Call promptly for any door locked shut after a self-clean cycle that has cooled fully, because the release mechanism is behind the control panel. A leaking door is worth fixing quickly: it wastes energy and it puts heat into cabinetry that was never meant to take it.
