Most likely causes on a ventless compact dryer, in order
- The second lint stage — the condenser filter or coil — first, and the single most common cause on this class: a ventless dryer has a lint filter at the door and a condenser behind it, and almost nobody cleans the second one, so the air loop closes down and drying stops
- The condensate tank full or its drain hose blocked — the machine has nowhere to put the water it removes, so it stops removing it
- Overloading a small drum — a condenser dryer needs air moving around and through the load, and a packed compact drum leaves a damp core with a dry surface — a very recognisable signature
- Room temperature and ventilation — the condenser rejects its heat into the room rather than down a duct, so a small closed room heats up and the dryer ends up trying to condense moisture into warm air
What to check, and why in this order
- Empty the condensate tank and clean the door lint filter before anything else — These are the two things the machine expects to be done every cycle and both are free
- Open the condenser access and clean the condenser itself. — This is the check that resolves most of these and the one owners almost never make
- Run a small load and see whether it dries in a normal time. — That separates a machine fault from a loading problem in one cycle
Step by step
- Empty the condensate tank and refit it fully, listening for it to seat. — Time: a minute.
- Pull the door lint filter, clear it by hand, rinse it if it is furred with a fine film, and dry it before refitting. — Time: several minutes.
- Open the condenser access at the base, withdraw the condenser and rinse it through until the water runs clear, then drain and refit it. — Time: several minutes plus drying time.
- Open a window or a door in the room while the dryer runs, and check the machine has clearance around it. — Time: a minute.
- Wipe the moisture sensor bars inside the drum with a little white vinegar on a cloth to remove softener film. — Time: a few minutes.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Unplug the dryer before opening the condenser access, and let it cool first — the condenser and the drum stay hot for a long time after a cycle. Never run the dryer with the lint filter out or the condenser removed, because lint reaching the heater is the classic dryer fire mechanism.
When to stop and call a technician
Call for service when a small load will not dry with a clean filter, a clean condenser and an empty tank; when the drum never gets warm; or when a thermal cut-out keeps opening after the air path has been cleared. Element and cut-out work is live work.
