The short answer

- The boot fold and door glass rim — the biggest physical reservoir on a front-loading platform, never reached by any cycle, and full of exactly what feeds a biofilm

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never mix a machine cleaner, a descaler or vinegar with bleach or any chlorine product — the combination releases a toxic gas. Use one product per cycle with the drum empty, wear gloves in the boot fold because underwires and glass collect there, and isolate the machine before reaching into it.
When to stop and call a technician
Call the route operator when the smell returns within days of cleaning the boot and the dispenser, when water stands in the drum between uses, or when the smell is clearly coming from the drain path rather than the machine. A persistent smell with clean components usually means water is being retained where you cannot reach.
