The short answer
When an Econ-O-Wash commercial washer will not drain, the first question is whether the problem is the machine or the room. Most likely causes on a commercial washer, in order
- The building drain or shared standpipe — first in a shared room and irrelevant in a house: several machines discharging into one line means a partly blocked standpipe shows up as a drain fault on whichever machine is running at the time
- Coins, lint and hardware in the drain path — a coin-operated machine sees coins, keys, underwires and buttons on a scale no domestic machine does, and they collect in the pump filter and the drain valve
- Drain hose height or a kink behind the machine — machines get pushed back against a wall in a tight room, and a hose crushed or lifted wrong stops the pump moving water
- Pump filter or trap not serviced — high duty means the filter fills far faster than the service interval anyone remembers, and a full filter starves the pump before the pump fails
- Drain valve stuck on a valve-drain platform — many commercial machines drain by gravity through a valve rather than by pump, and a valve held open or shut by debris is a distinct fault with a distinct symptom
What to check, and why in this order
- Look behind the machines at the standpipe first, and check whether any neighbouring machine is also affected. — If the room is the problem, nothing inside this machine matters
- Check the drain hose run for kinks and for the height it is hung at — It is the second most common cause and needs no tools
- Have the pump filter or trap opened and cleared — On a high-duty machine that is where coins and lint accumulate

Before you start: safety
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Isolate the machine at its breaker before opening a pump filter, and expect the trap to be full — put a tray and towels down first. Wash water in a commercial machine can be hot enough to scald, so let a stalled cycle stand before draining it by hand, and wear gloves because broken glass and underwires are common in a shared-room trap.
When to stop and call a technician
Call the route operator when the standpipe is clear, the hose is straight and the filter has been cleared and the machine still will not drain, or when the pump is silent at the drain step. On a valve-drain platform a stuck valve is a service part.
