The short answer
Most EcoMax compact refrigerators have no ice maker at all — they have a small chill compartment with a tray, and that compartment is not a freezer. That is the first thing to settle, because it explains the majority of "ice maker fault" complaints on this class. If the compartment is not freezing a tray of water at all, treat this as a cooling problem rather than an ice problem. What you have is a two-door compact with a separate freezer section, its own gasket and its own door. This page is ordered for the second pass: the obvious fix was tried and the fault returned, so the ranking puts the causes behind a recurring or intermittent fault above the ones behind a permanent one.
What you are seeing
- The chill compartment will not freeze a tray of water solid
- Ice in the tray is soft, or refreezes into a single slab
- Thick frost has built up around the compartment so the tray no longer fits
- If the fresh-food space is also warm, read the not-cooling page first — one evaporator serves both — This points at a different fault; the page named above covers it.
Most likely causes on a compact refrigerator, in order
- Only one compartment affected — on a two-door cabinet the freezer and the fresh-food space are fed from one system through different paths, so a fault in one and not the other points at airflow or a damper rather than at the compressor — establishing which is warm outranks every other check
- Frost build-up around the compartment — manual defrost is overdue, the ice insulates the plate, and the compartment loses what little freezing capacity it had — the same mechanism as the cooling page, seen from the ice side
- Thermostat dial set too warm — the chill compartment is the first thing to suffer when the dial comes down, because it depends on the coldest part of a single evaporator
What to check, and why in this order
- Put a thermometer in each compartment and read both — On a two-door cabinet the pattern across the two is the diagnosis
- Settle first whether the appliance has an ice maker at all — Read the rating plate and the documentation. Everything below depends on the answer
Step by step
- Read the rating plate and confirm whether the appliance has an ice maker or a chill compartment. — Time: a few minutes.
Tools: a torch
- Put a thermometer in each compartment and read both after a long settled run, noting which one is out. — Time: several hours.
Tools: two thermometers
- Put a thermometer in the chill compartment and leave it through a long settled run with the door shut. — Time: several hours.
Tools: a freezer thermometer
Before you start: safety
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip frost off a plate or a mould with anything metal — the tubing behind it is thin and a puncture ends the appliance. Use only descalers intended for food-contact appliances, and rinse thoroughly, because residue ends up in the ice.
When to stop and call a technician
Call for service when a cycle will not complete with water present and the sensors clear, when the compartment cannot be brought to freezing with a clear plate and the dial at its coldest, or when there is water inside the machine bay. Pumps, valves and sealed-system work are not owner jobs. On a repeat of a fault that was already fixed once, say so when you call and describe what was done the first time — a technician treats a recurrence differently from a first failure, and it usually shortens the visit.

What this page does not cover
This is generalized information: it covers EcoMax refrigerators as a class, not one family or model. It does not carry your model's error-code table, wiring, part numbers, capacities or ambient range — those are on the rating plate and in the documentation, which are the authority wherever they disagree with this page. Any family- or model-specific page is reached from the brand hub below, and takes precedence over this one.
