The short answer
An EcoMax compact refrigerator that has stopped cooling almost always still has a working compressor. Most likely causes on a compact refrigerator, in order
- Only one compartment affected — on a two-door cabinet the freezer and the fresh-food space are fed from one system through different paths, so a fault in one and not the other points at airflow or a damper rather than at the compressor — establishing which is warm outranks every other check
- Thermostat dial moved or set too warm — a compact fridge is controlled by a mechanical dial with no display to contradict it, and the dial sits where bottles and hands reach it — this is the most common single cause on the class and costs nothing to rule out

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip, scrape or pry ice off the evaporator plate with a knife, screwdriver or ice pick. The plate is thin aluminium with refrigerant tubing bonded to it, and a puncture ends the appliance immediately. Warm air, a bowl of hot water inside the closed cabinet, and time are the only defrosting tools.
When to stop and call a technician
Call for service when the compressor hums and clicks off repeatedly on a good outlet, when the cabinet has been fully defrosted and cleared and still will not pull down after a long run, or when the rear coil is warm at one end and stays cold at the other. Sealed-system work is licensed work and is not a homeowner job. Without service literature the most useful thing you can provide is a photograph of the rating plate, because model and serial identification decides both what the fault list looks like and whether the part exists.
