Which cycle is actually selected?
Most compact apartment washers heat their own water rather than drawing a hot supply, so a cold wash here really can be a heating fault - but a cool cycle selected by habit is far more common. Establish which cycle is being used before anything else.
What you are seeing
- Every cycle washes cold whatever is selected.
- Warm cycles are only lukewarm.
- Greasy soil is no longer removed.
- The cycle time has become much longer.
- The cycle time has become much shorter.
- Not this fault: A cycle that stalls partway is a cycle fault - read that page.
- Not this fault: Residue on clothes with warm water is a detergent problem.
Most likely causes, in Direct Supply order
- A cool or eco cycle selected by habit — Why ranked: First on any machine used daily. It is not a fault, and it explains most cold-wash complaints.
- Cold-only supply connected at installation — Why ranked: Second: where a machine can take a hot feed and only the cold was connected, it must heat everything itself and long cycles follow.
- Heating element or its relay failed — Why ranked: Third. The machine fills correctly and never warms, and the cycle usually runs longer as it keeps trying.
- Temperature sensor reading high — Why ranked: Fourth, which stops the machine calling for heat and typically shortens the cycle instead.
- Inlet screen blocked, throttling the fill — Why ranked: Last, which gives a slow fill and a weak wash across every cycle.
What to check, in order
- Check which cycle is being selected, and try a warm one deliberately. — Because: A cool default is the leading cause and it costs nothing to exclude.
- Note whether the cycle has become longer or shorter. — Because: Longer means the machine is trying and failing to heat; shorter means it thinks it is already hot.
- Feel the door glass partway through a warm cycle. — Because: Warm glass means the heater is working, which redirects the whole diagnosis.
- Check whether a hot supply is connected at all. — Because: A cold-only connection on a machine designed for both explains long cycles and lukewarm results.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not open the door mid-cycle on a hot wash, and never adjust a building hot water setting to compensate for a machine. Report a machine that trips its breaker at the heating stage rather than resetting it. Never run a machine with a panel removed. Let the drum cool before reaching in after a hot cycle.
When this becomes a service call
The machine stays cold on a deliberately warm cycle. The cycle time has changed sharply with no change in use. The machine trips its breaker at the heating stage. There is a smell of scorched plastic during a wash.
