Does this machine heat at all?
A shared washer that never warms may not have a heater at all - many commercial machines take hot water from the building supply rather than heating it themselves. Establish which kind of machine you have before treating a cold wash as a fault.
What you are seeing
- Every cycle washes cold regardless of the setting.
- Hot cycles are only lukewarm.
- Greasy soil is no longer being removed.
- The machine got worse after work on the building hot water.
- One machine in the bank washes cold and the others do not.
- Not this fault: A cycle that stalls partway is a cycle fault - read that page.
- Not this fault: Residue on clothes with warm water is a detergent problem.
Most likely causes, in Direct Supply order
- No building hot water reaching the machine — Why ranked: First on community equipment. A closed valve or a hot water fault upstream leaves every machine on the line washing cold.
- Hot inlet valve or its screen blocked — Why ranked: Second: sediment collects at the inlet screen and throttles the hot fill, which gives lukewarm rather than hot.
- Cold cycle selected by users by default — Why ranked: Third. The shortest cool cycle is the one most people choose, and it is not a fault at all.
- Internal heater or its relay failed, on machines that have one — Why ranked: Fourth. It presents as a machine that fills correctly and never warms during the cycle.
- Temperature sensor reading high — Why ranked: Last, which stops the machine calling for heat and often shortens the cycle as well.
What to check, in order
- Check whether other machines on the same supply also wash cold. — Because: A whole bank washing cold is the building supply, not the machines.
- Run the hot supply at a nearby tap and confirm it runs hot. — Because: This settles the upstream question quickly and without tools.
- Check which cycle users are selecting. — Because: A cool cycle chosen by default explains a cold wash with a perfectly healthy machine.
- Note whether the machine has its own heater at all. — Because: Many commercial machines do not, and knowing that redirects the whole investigation.

- Run a nearby hot tap until it runs hot and note the result. — N: 1 — Tools: None — Time: quick
- Select a hot cycle deliberately and feel the drum glass partway through. — N: 2 — Tools: None — Time: one cycle

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Hot water in a community setting is regulated for resident safety - never adjust a mixing valve or a supply temperature yourself. Do not open the door mid-cycle on a hot wash. Never adjust building hot water settings to make a machine wash hotter. Report a machine that trips its breaker when heating.
When this becomes a service call
Every machine on the supply washes cold. One machine washes cold with proven hot water at its valve. The machine trips its breaker at the heating stage. Cycle times have changed sharply with no change in use.
