The door is the interlock
The door on a shared-laundry dryer is opened and slammed many times a day, so the catch and the seal wear far faster than on a household machine. A worn catch matters most, because it is the interlock, and a machine that will not hold its door is a machine that will not run.
What you are seeing
- The door does not stay shut, or springs back.
- The machine only runs if the door is pushed while start is pressed.
- Warm air escapes around the door during a cycle.
- The seal is flattened, torn or has come loose.
- The door is out of line with the machine front.
- Not this fault: A machine that runs but does not heat is a heating fault - read that page.
- Not this fault: A cycle that stops partway with a hot drum is a thermal trip.
Most likely causes, in Direct Supply order
- Catch or strike worn from heavy use — Why ranked: First on shared equipment. It is the highest-cycle mechanical part on the machine and it is also the interlock.
- Hinge worn or the door dropped — Why ranked: Second: a door out of line stops the catch meeting the strike squarely, so it wears even faster.
- Seal flattened or torn — Why ranked: Third. It costs drying performance rather than stopping the machine, so it is reported later than it happens.
- Door slammed against a loaded drum — Why ranked: Fourth. Overloading pushes items against the door and stresses both catch and seal every single time.
- Interlock switch itself failed — Why ranked: Last, and separated from a worn catch by a door that latches firmly and still does not let the machine start.
What to check, in order
- Close the door gently and see whether it holds without a push. — Because: A door that needs help has a worn catch, and that is the difference between a working machine and a dead one.
- Press start with the door pushed firmly and compare. — Because: If it runs only then, the fault is the catch or the interlock rather than the control.
- Look along the closed door for a gap and note where it is. — Because: A one-sided gap is hinge or alignment; an all-round gap is the seal.
- Run a hand near the door during a cycle to feel for escaping warm air. — Because: Escaping air is lost drying capacity and it explains longer cycles.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The door interlock is what stops the drum turning with the door open - a machine that runs with the door open must be taken out of service immediately. Never tape or wedge a door catch to keep a machine running. Report any machine that starts with the door open. Do not overload against the door to close it.
When this becomes a service call
The machine runs with the door open. The door catch is broken or the door will not hold. The seal is torn or has come out of its channel. The door has dropped and no longer lines up with the front.
