Where outdoor water actually comes from
Water under an outdoor refrigerator is usually condensate the cabinet cannot get rid of, not a plumbing failure. Outdoor humidity produces far more condensate than an indoor kitchen ever does, and the drain path in a built-in island is short, shallow and easy to block. Trace the drain before you look for a broken line.
What you are seeing
- Water on the island floor beneath the unit, worst in humid weather.
- Ice building at the back wall inside the compartment.
- Water pooling inside the cabinet floor rather than outside.
- The drain tray at the back is overflowing.
- Water appears only after the doors have been opened repeatedly.
- Not this fault: Water inside the compartment with the cabinet warm is a cooling fault first.
- Not this fault: A wet island with no water at the unit itself is usually rain or irrigation, not the appliance.
Most likely causes, in Delta Heat order
- Condensate drain blocked with debris or algae — Why ranked: First on an outdoor unit. Warm humid air, an open island and organic debris are the perfect conditions for a blocked drain, and the leak follows humidity exactly.
- Evaporation tray overwhelmed in humid weather — Why ranked: Second: the tray is sized for indoor duty on many designs, and outdoors in summer it simply cannot keep up. It shows as a slow, steady drip rather than a flood.
- Door seal leaking, so warm moist air is being drawn in — Why ranked: Third. A hardened gasket loads the evaporator with moisture continuously, which turns into both frost inside and water outside.
- Cabinet not level, so condensate runs the wrong way — Why ranked: Fourth. A slight tilt sends water to the front of the compartment instead of to the drain, and it puddles inside the cabinet.
- Ice maker supply line or fitting leaking — Why ranked: Last, and only where the unit is plumbed. It is distinguished by being independent of weather and of how often the door is opened.
What to check, in order
- Note whether the water tracks humid weather or appears in all conditions. — Because: Humidity-linked water is condensate; weather-independent water is plumbing, and that single observation splits the list.
- Find the drain outlet at the back of the compartment and check it is clear. — Because: This is cause one and it is usually confirmed or cleared in a minute.
- Look at the evaporation tray behind the grille to see whether it is overflowing. — Because: An overflowing tray with a clear drain is cause two and needs a different answer.
- Check the cabinet is level front to back inside the opening. — Because: A tilt explains water inside the compartment that never reaches the drain at all.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water and an outdoor electrical installation are a bad combination - do not work at the unit or its receptacle while there is standing water at the island base. Never clear a drain with a metal probe that can pierce the liner. Do not pull a built-in unit from its island alone. Dry the island floor before restoring power.
When this becomes a service call
Water appears in dry weather and does not track humidity. The drain is clear and level is correct and water still collects inside. A supply line or fitting to the ice maker is wet or dripping. There is water standing inside the island around the electrical supply.
