A dishwasher that will not start is usually being prevented rather than broken: a door that is not latching, a control lock, a delay start left set, or a supply that is off. What you observe
- It hums briefly and stops — A machine that has started and aborted, often on a fill or drain fault rather than a start fault.

Causes, most likely first on this appliance
- The door is not latching — The machine will not start until the latch proves the door shut. Ranked first on DCS: these machines are integrated, levelled against a hard counter and plumbed behind a panel, so the installation carries more of the fault load than the machine does, and a heavy professional cabinet installed to tight tolerances has less room for error than its build quality suggests.
- A control lock or a delay start — A child lock engaged by a long press, or a delay timer set by mistake, produces a machine that looks alive and does nothing for hours. Ranked second: it ranks here because the causes above it are free to check and this one is not.

- Check the breaker and any switch that feeds the machine — Many installations have a switch under the sink or beside the machine that gets knocked off during cleaning.

- Push the racks fully in and close the door deliberately — Check nothing is standing proud of the racks, then close the door firmly rather than gently and try start again.

Switch the machine off at its breaker before checking any wiring, any connection or the switch that feeds it, and leave it off while your hands are behind the kickboard. Do not defeat the door latch or hold the door closed to force a start.
When to call a technician
Call once the power, the door, the control lock, the supply valve and a clean cancel have all been ruled out, because what is left is the latch switch, the panel or the board, and each needs the machine out of its opening. Call an electrician instead if the breaker trips or the local switch is dead.
