The short answer
A leaking dishwasher is usually leaking for a reason an owner can see: a door seal, an overfilled tub from the wrong detergent, or a hose connection that has loosened. On a compact cabinet the ranking below starts with those.
What you observe
- Water on the floor at the front of the machine — Usually the door seal or the door itself rather than a plumbing connection.
- Water under the machine with a dry door — A hose, a connection or the pump, all of which sit at the back and underneath.
- NEAR MISS: a small puddle after the door is opened at the end — Condensate running off a hot door is normal on many machines.
Causes, most likely first on this appliance
- The door seal — A gasket that has hardened, torn or come out of its channel lets water past at the bottom corners first. Ranked first on Danby: a compact or portable machine has a short, shallow water path and a low-lift pump, so anything that path has to fight beats any electrical cause to the top of the list, and this line spans bar cabinets to apartment units, all of them designed to go where a full-size appliance would not.
- A supply or drain connection — The inlet fitting at the valve, the hose clamp at the drain, or the connection under the sink. Ranked second: it ranks here because it is common enough to be worth checking, but only once the free checks above are clean.
- The machine is not level in its opening — A machine tilted forward carries water to the door rather than the sump, and the tub fills unevenly. Ranked third: it is in the middle of the list because it is cheap to rule out and expensive to assume.
- A split hose, a failed pump seal or a cracked tub — The causes that are left once the door, the detergent and the connections are clean. Ranked last: it is last because on an appliance this size the major components outlive everything around them, and replacing one often costs more than the appliance is worth.
Check in this order, and why
- Run a finger all the way round the door gasket — Hardening, tears or a section standing out of its channel explains water at the front, and nothing else produces that pattern.
- Dry everything, lay paper towel under each connection and run a cycle — The towel that comes up wet names the connection, and this is the most reliable single test on the page.
- Check the machine sits level front to back and side to side — A tilt forward explains water at the door on a machine with a perfect gasket.
What an owner can safely check
- Clean the door gasket and press it back into its channel — Wipe the gasket and the sealing face, look for tears, and seat any section that has lifted back into its groove.

Before you open anything
Safety
Switch the machine off at its breaker and shut its supply valve before working on any connection, and keep the power off while your hands are under the machine: water and an electrical appliance on the same floor is the hazard here rather than the leak itself. Water in the tub after a cycle can be hot enough to scald.
When to call a technician
Call once the door seal, the detergent, the levelling and every accessible connection have been checked and the leak persists, because what is left is behind the machine or inside it. Call immediately if water is reaching an outlet, if it is coming from under the machine faster than it can be mopped, or if it has already reached a neighbouring cabinet.
