The short answer
Most new refrigerator noises are the cabinet telling you about its installation rather than about a failing part. On an imported mass-market cabinet the ranking below follows how the cabinet is built and where it usually sits, and the top two causes cost nothing to rule out.
What you observe
- A whirring or chirping from the freezer section — Something turning behind the rear panel, usually the evaporator fan.
- A hum or drone from the bottom or back — The compressor or the condenser fan, which is the only part of the cabinet that should hum continuously.
- NEAR MISS: gurgling and ticking after the cabinet cycles off — That is refrigerant settling and metal contracting.
Causes, most likely first on this cabinet
- Something touching the cabinet or sitting on it — A drip tray, a wall, a cabinet side, a bottle on top or a coiled water line all turn a normal vibration into a noise. Ranked first on Daewoo: these cabinets are built to a price on a deliberately plain platform, so the simple mechanical causes really are the common ones and the exotic ones really are rare, and on an apartment-size platform built to a price the seal and the door take the heaviest share of the faults.
- The cabinet is not level or not standing solid — A foot slightly off the floor turns the compressor hum into a rattle through the whole cabinet. Ranked second: it is placed here because it is the first cause that needs more than a look.
- The condenser fan at the back or underneath — Debris in the blade, or a bearing at the end of its life, both produce a rattle that tracks the compressor running. Ranked third: it ranks here because it is common on this platform but slower to develop than the cause above.
- The compressor or its mounts — Rubber mounts harden with age and let the compressor case drum against the frame. Ranked last: it is last because it is genuinely uncommon on this platform, and because it is the one cause an owner cannot confirm or fix without licensed tools.
Check in this order, and why
- Pull the cabinet clear of the wall and run it — If the sound goes, you have found it.
- Push each top corner of the cabinet in turn — Any rock at all means a foot is short, and that alone explains most new rattles.
- Listen at the back grille while the cabinet is running — A sound that starts and stops exactly with the compressor is on the condenser side.
What an owner can safely check
- Pull the cabinet out, clear the top and re-seat the drip tray — Leave the specified clearance at the back and check that no water line or cord is pressed against the cabinet skin.

- Level the cabinet and set both front feet down solid — Adjust the feet until there is no rock at any corner, with a very slight backward tilt so the doors swing closed.

Safety
Unplug the cabinet or switch off its breaker before taking off any panel or reaching behind the rear grille, and keep it off while your hands are inside: a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a condenser fan can start without warning. Do not hold a freezer door switch in with tape and then leave the cabinet unattended.
When to call a technician
Call when the noise comes with a loss of cooling, when it comes from behind a panel you would need to remove, or when it is a hard metallic knock rather than a rattle or a hum. A noise on its own, with the cabinet still holding temperature, is rarely urgent.
