The short answer
Dryer noise is one of the more readable faults: a thump, a squeal, a scrape and a rattle each come from a different part, and the drum has only a few moving pieces. On an imported mass-market cabinet the ranking below follows which of those wears first.
What you observe
- A scraping or grinding from the drum edge — A worn drum glide or a foreign object caught between drum and bulkhead.
- A rattle that only happens sometimes — Almost always something in the drum or in a pocket rather than a machine fault.
- A rhythmic thumping that tracks the drum turning — Something on the drum surface, or a flat spot on a support roller.
- NEAR MISS: a loud hum with no tumbling — That is a motor or belt failure rather than a noise complaint, and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on this appliance
- Something loose in the drum or in a pocket — Coins, buttons, zips and underwire produce a clatter that comes and goes with the load. Ranked first on Daewoo: these machines are commonly fitted to a vent run that was already there and was never sized for them, so the installation beats the appliance to the top of the list, and on an apartment-size platform built to a price the seal and the door take the heaviest share of the faults.
- The machine is not standing level — A dryer rocking on three feet drums the whole cabinet and knocks against whatever is beside it. Ranked second: it ranks here because it is common on this platform but slower to develop than the cause above.
- Worn drum support rollers — The rollers the drum rides on flatten and roughen with age. Ranked third: it ranks here because on this platform it is the second thing to go, not the first.
- Worn drum glides at the front bulkhead — The pads the drum front rides on wear through and let metal touch metal. Ranked last: it is last because it is genuinely uncommon on this platform, and because it is the one cause an owner cannot confirm or fix without licensed tools.
Check in this order, and why
- Run the machine empty for a moment and listen — A machine that is quiet empty and noisy loaded has something in the load, not a fault.
- Push each top corner and watch for a rock — Any movement means a foot is short, and that explains most new rattles on its own.
- Note whether the sound tracks the drum speed exactly — A noise locked to drum rotation rather than to the motor is a roller or a glide.
What an owner can safely check
- Empty the drum, check the seam and the lint trap area, then run it empty — Feel round the drum seam and under the lint housing for a trapped coin, then run the machine empty and compare.

- Level the machine and set all four feet down solid — Adjust the feet until there is no rock at any corner and the machine is not touching the washer or the wall beside it.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the machine or switch off its breaker before reaching inside the cabinet, before removing the lint housing and before lifting the drum front, and keep it off while your hands are inside. On a gas dryer, shut the gas valve at the machine before moving it, and if you smell gas at any point: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or your emergency services number from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself.
When to call a technician
Call when the noise is a squeal or a grind rather than a rattle, when it tracks the drum continuously, or when the drum has visible play at the front. Those are wear items behind the cabinet and they are replaced as a set on most machines.
