The short answer
An ice maker on a CTM refrigerator that has stopped producing is usually being starved rather than broken. Water supply, freezer temperature and the arm or sensor that tells it to run account for most cases, and all three are checkable without a tool. Keep the machine in mind — light-commercial refrigeration built for a merchandising duty cycle, not a domestic one — rather than the category average.
What you actually see
- Cubes are small, hollow or partly formed — That is a fill-volume problem, which points at supply pressure or a restriction.
- Ice has fused into one block in the bin — Slow use plus a warm cycle; the cubes partly thaw and refreeze together.
- A thin sheet of ice under the bin — Overfill or a leaking fill tube rather than a maker fault.
- NEAR MISS — water on the floor at the front — That is a supply or dispenser leak and belongs on the water-leak page.
The causes in the order they actually occur here
- Water supply shut off, kinked or frozen — The saddle valve behind the unit gets closed during other work and is rarely reopened; a kinked line behind a pushed-back cabinet does the same job. Ranked first here because these cabinets are opened dozens of times an hour in service, which puts the door closer, the sweep gasket and the defrost cycle ahead of anything electronic.
- Freezer not cold enough to trigger a harvest — The mould thermostat will not release a batch until the compartment reaches its harvest temperature, so a freezer running warm simply never cycles.
- Water filter clogged or overdue — A restricted filter drops fill volume before it stops it, which produces small and hollow cubes rather than none.
- Feeler arm raised or the maker switched off — Many units also have an on-off switch or a menu setting that someone has used and forgotten.
Check in this order, and why
- Trace the line behind the unit and confirm the valve is open and the tube is not pinched — First — It is the single most common cause and it is visible from behind the cabinet.
- Check the freezer temperature against the USDA safe freezer temperature with a thermometer — Second — If the compartment is not cold enough, nothing further down the chain matters.
- Note when the filter was last changed and how the dispenser flow looks — Third — Flow at the dispenser is a direct read on what the ice maker is being offered.
