The answer first
Water under a washer comes from one of four places: the inlet side, the drain side, the door or lid seal, or the tub itself — and where the water appears tells you which, before anything is moved. On a Crosley a tub seal, sump or bellows failing internally comes first, because on a machine that has been in the same place for years, the parts that have been moving all that time are where the fault usually is. Hose connections, seals and the filter housing are owner work; a tub seal or a cracked sump is not. The order below is written for a long-service machine in a settled installation; on a unit that was installed or moved in the last few weeks, setup and supply faults rank above everything here.
The observables
- Water appears only during the drain or spin — That is the drain side: the pump, the trap, the drain hose and its connection.
- A trickle from the bottom of the door — A front-loader door seal with a fold, a tear, or something trapped in it.
- Water at the rear of the cabinet with dry hoses — Points inside the machine rather than at its connections.
- NEAR MISS — Water on the floor between two machines — Run each alone before deciding which one is leaking.
Why it happens, in order
- A tub seal, sump or bellows failing internally — Most likely here: on a machine that has been in the same place for years, the parts that have been moving all that time are where the fault usually is. Water appearing at the rear with dry hoses, or only during the spin at high speed, points inside the cabinet.
- Over-dosing detergent so the drum foams over — Second on the list: Excess foam escapes through the drawer and the door and reads as a leak; it is also why the machine may stop rinsing properly.
- The filter cover not seated or its seal damaged — Third on the list, and the least likely: After a filter clean, a cross-threaded cover or a displaced O-ring leaks steadily at the bottom front of the cabinet. The filters, screens and seals on a long-service unit are years older than the owner tends to remember, and they fail gradually rather than suddenly.
The sequence that saves time
- Note whether the leak appears only at high spin speed — Speed-dependent leaks are usually the tub seal or a cracked sump, and they need the cabinet opened. It goes first because on a machine of this age the wearing parts are where the fault usually is, and this one is quick to confirm.
- Look for suds rather than water on the floor — Foam residue when it dries is a dose problem, not a seal problem.
- Look for water at the lower front corner rather than the rear — The filter housing is at the front, so a front-corner leak points straight at it.

- Run a hot maintenance cycle with no detergent and halve the dose afterwards — Most households dose for water far harder than they actually have.

Call when the hoses are dry at their couplings, the filter cover is seated, the seal is clean and intact, and water still appears — particularly if it only happens at high spin speed.
