The answer first
A washing machine that never warms up washes cold whatever the programme says. On a CBMmart washing machine the check is whether the door glass warms at all on a hot cycle. What you observe
- Detergent is not dissolving fully — Powder needs warmth; cold water leaves it on the laundry.
- The cycle time is much longer than usual — The machine is holding the stage while it waits for heat.
- A heating code on the display — The machine has timed out waiting for a temperature.
- NEAR MISS — laundry comes out soaking wet — That is a spin or drain problem, not heat.
Causes, most likely first on this unit
- A programme that barely heats — Eco and quick cycles run cool by design. The machine is doing what was asked of it. Electronics are checked here because a mode or a lock imitates a dead machine and costs nothing to clear.
- A failed heating element — The element sits under the drum and fails open. The machine carries on running a cold wash and often reports nothing. It sits in the middle: likely enough to matter, and cheap enough to be worth proving before the expensive candidates.
- Heavy scale on the element — In hard water the element furs up, heats slowly and eventually fails. It belongs at this point because it is common, and because ruling it out narrows what is left considerably.
- A temperature sensor out of range — The machine stops heating because it believes the water is already hot.
- A cold-fill-only machine on a long cycle — Most modern machines take cold water and heat it themselves, so the mains temperature affects the time rather than the result.
The order of checks
- Feel the door glass twenty minutes into a hot cycle — Warm glass means the heater works. Cold glass is the fault, confirmed.
- Check which programme is being used — Eco and quick washes run cool by design, whatever the label suggests.
- Look at the code if the machine shows one — A heating timeout is reported explicitly on most machines.
- Consider the water hardness in your area — Scale is the usual reason an element dies early.
What an owner can safely do
- Run a full hot cycle with an empty drum and check the glass — It removes the load as a variable and confirms the fault.
- Use a descaler if the water is hard — It will not revive a failed element but it protects a working one.
- Switch to a hotter programme for a load and compare — It separates a programme misunderstanding from a real heating fault.
- STOP before testing or replacing the heating element — It sits under the drum at mains voltage, with the cabinet off.
Read this before touching the machine
Safety
Do not run a machine that trips its breaker when heating: a failed element leaking to earth is the usual cause, and repeated resets remove the protection. Unplug before opening the cabinet.
When to stop and call
Call when the glass stays cold on a hot cycle with an empty drum — that is an element or a sensor, both metered tests inside the cabinet. Call immediately if the machine trips the breaker at the point it should start heating.
