The short answer for this family
On the Criterion CCR refrigerator family a cabinet that runs without holding temperature is an airflow and heat-rejection problem far more often than a dead compressor, because a cold plate or box evaporator in the food space itself, usually with no fan is what this platform puts in the cold path. Only the last of the ranked causes below is outside owner territory. Check your own code against the eight in the table below.
What owners of these models actually see
- Frost has built into a sheet where it is normally a dusting — Look at the cold plate or freezer box inside the food space. A hard white blanket there is insulation, and it stops this cabinet cooling long before it stops it running.
- One compartment is wrong and the other is close to correct — A compact cabinet with a small freezer box will lose the box before the food space, because the box is doing the work for both.
- The compressor runs far longer than it used to, or never stops — The same fault seen from the other side: the cabinet is making cold and losing it, or making cold and not moving it.
- NEAR MISS: the cabinet is silent and nothing runs at all — Silence is a power, start-relay or control fault, diagnosed in a different order. Start there instead of here.
Causes, most likely first on this platform
- Blocked condenser airflow or a dirty condenser coil — Ranked here by how this cabinet breathes: the condenser is a small skin or rear coil with very little margin, so anything against the back of the cabinet counts. Heat that cannot leave comes back as a cabinet that will not pull down.
- A door or lid seal that is holding the cabinet open — This platform carries one magnetic gasket on a light door that is easy to knock out of square. A light door on a compact cabinet is easily knocked out of square, and the cabinet has so little thermal mass that the loss shows up quickly.
- The cabinet is loaded in a way this layout cannot cool — This high only on this kind of cabinet: cold falls off the plate by gravity, so shelf loading and door opening dominate how the cabinet holds temperature. A load blocking the cold surface mimics a failing cabinet and costs nothing to rule out.
Where to start, and why here
- Confirm the cabinet is actually running — Listen at the back for the compressor and feel the condenser for heat. A cabinet not running at all is a different page. Each step rules out a cause the next one would inherit.
- Look at the cold surface for a frost blanket — Open up and look at the cold plate or freezer box inside the food space. Frost turned into a solid sheet is the cause, not a side effect, and it decides everything after it.
- Check how the cabinet is breathing at the condenser — On this platform the condenser is a small skin or rear coil with very little margin, so anything against the back of the cabinet counts. Pull the cabinet out far enough to see, clear the coil and the grille of dust and lint, and check that nothing is standing against the air path.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not tape the door switch shut and walk away, and do not open, cut or braze any part of the sealed refrigerant circuit: that is licensed work. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below and a freezer at 0 °F (-18 °C) or below, so move perishable food out while you work.

When this stops being owner work
Where the line falls here is worth stating plainly. Call once the airflow checks are clean, because what is left on this family is the sealed system and the control board, and neither is an owner part. Call immediately for a burning smell, oil around the compressor, or a compressor that tries to start and cuts out every few minutes: oil outside the tubing means the circuit is open. On this platform the cabinet has to come away from the wall before most work can start, which is a two-person job on a loaded cabinet.
