The quick verdict
Start outside the cabinet. A refrigerator that shows nothing at all is usually behind a tripped breaker, a switched-off socket, a damaged cord or an extension lead that was never rated for it, and every one of those is checkable in a few minutes with nothing but your eyes and another appliance. The checks are ordered so the cheap ones eliminate the expensive ones.
How it presents
- The light works but nothing runs — Power is arriving, so the fault is inside: a control board, a relay or a start device rather than the socket.
- The breaker trips when the cabinet is plugged in — Tripping on connection is a fault with a safety dimension, and repeated resets are how it gets worse.
- It ran until the cabinet was moved or cleaned — A plug part out of its socket, a cord pinched under a foot, or a supply lead damaged in the move: all common and all visible. It takes less time than reading about it.
- NEAR MISS: everything lights up but the food is warm — Lights and a display mean the machine is alive; warm food with a live machine is a different diagnosis. Time it roughly, as the pattern matters more than the exact interval.
What causes it, in order of likelihood
- A damaged cord or a plug not fully home — Second because moving a refrigerator is what people do before it dies: the plug gets nudged, the cord gets crushed under a foot or against the wall, and the connection goes intermittent before it goes altogether.
- A failed main control board or its supply fuse — It sits here because the evidence is negative: everything upstream proves good and nothing downstream moves.
- A thermostat or temperature control turned fully off — Worth including because it produces a silent machine with working lights, and because somebody has usually been cleaning near the dial.
- A failed compressor — It is at the bottom because assuming it first is how people are talked into replacing a cabinet that needed a relay. If this is the cause, the evidence for it is usually visible rather than inferred.
The elimination order
- Look at the consumer unit for a tripped breaker — Reset it once. If it trips again as soon as the cabinet is connected, stop there, because that is a fault rather than a nuisance trip. Nothing below this line is worth chasing until this one is ruled out.
- Inspect the cord along its whole length and at the plug — Crushing, cuts and heat marks at the plug pins all point at the supply lead rather than the machine. It needs nothing you do not already own.
- Listen at the back for a click every few minutes — A regular click with no run is a start-device pattern and it changes the diagnosis completely.
The homeowner checks
- Reseat the plug firmly and check it for heat marks — Pull it, look at the pins for discolouration, and push it fully home. A browned pin is a warning in its own right and needs attention. Note the result even if it is negative, because a ruled-out cause is progress.

- Remove extension leads and adaptors from the circuit — Plug the cabinet directly into a wall socket and try again. Do not force anything; the plastic in a modern appliance breaks rather than bends.

- Turn the temperature control fully on and wait — Set it to a mid position rather than the coldest, give it several minutes, and listen for the compressor starting.

- Stop here if the next step would put a meter on live terminals — Everything beyond here belongs to somebody with a meter and the habit of using it properly.
Before you open anything
Safety
Take the plug out of the wall before you start, and keep it where you can see it. An isolated appliance can still have charge in it, and that is the reason for the pause. Never put a heat source close to plastic parts or the gasket while you are thawing ice. Keep every safety switch in circuit, in the state the factory left it.
The line between a fix and a call
The line is simple enough to state: proving the supply is owner work; a start relay, a control board or a compressor is a technician’s job and needs test gear. The split is worth respecting even when the part looks simple. Call promptly if frost or water keeps returning after you have cleared it, because something is still feeding it.
