The answer first
A Craftsman refrigerator that has become loud is usually still working, and that is the good news: the noisy parts are the cheap parts. Locate the sound before you do anything else, because the repair for a fan blade catching frost and the repair for a worn compressor mount have nothing in common. Nothing below asks you to open anything that should stay closed.
The observables
- A rhythmic knocking that comes and goes over hours — Defrost heaters, melt water and the ice maker all work on a slow cycle and all make noise doing it. Do it with the machine in its normal state rather than after you have already changed something.
- Gurgling or a trickling sound after the cabinet stops — Liquid sounds after a run are the machine relaxing, not a fault to chase. It is worth confirming twice before you act on it, since one observation can mislead.
- A vibration that comes through the floor — Contact noise: the cabinet is touching a wall or a cupboard, or standing on an uneven floor, and the whole room is acting as a soundboard. Do this before the check below it, because the answer changes what that one means.
- NEAR MISS: a squeal or scream from underneath with no cooling — Noise plus a warm cabinet is a different and more urgent page than noise on its own.
Causes, most likely first
- Debris or dust in the condenser fan underneath — Second because everything the kitchen floor carries ends up in the machinery deck: fluff, pet hair, a stray bag clip in the blade path, all of it audible and all of it removable. Keep an eye on whether it is getting worse, because the rate of change is itself evidence.
- The cabinet touching a wall, a cupboard or an uneven floor — Worth checking early precisely because nothing is broken and the cure is free. Treat the ordering as a route through the possibilities rather than as a prediction.
- The ice maker filling, harvesting or grinding on old ice — Ice makers are loud by design and louder when the bin is full of welded-together cubes; the noise arrives on a schedule, which is the giveaway.
- A failing fan motor that has started to whine — It sits at the end because the noise is distinctive and the repair is not owner work. It is placed here on how often it turns up, not on how serious it would be.
How to narrow it down
- Open the freezer door with the noise running — If the sound stops, the evaporator fan is the source. If this is the cause, the evidence for it is usually visible rather than inferred.
- Rock the cabinet gently and feel for contact — A cabinet resting against a wall or a worktop edge makes noise nothing inside it can explain. If the answer is clear, stop here and act on it.
- Note whether the noise follows a schedule — Slow, repeating cycles point at defrost and ice-making; continuous noise points at a fan or the compressor. Where two causes look alike from the outside, this is the one that is more often right.

- Vacuum the condenser coil and the fan area underneath — With the power off and the plinth or rear panel off, take the dust out with a soft brush and a vacuum rather than pushing it further in. A result here decides whether the next two checks are worth doing at all.

- Level the cabinet and check all four feet take weight — A foot that does not touch lets the whole machine rock on its frame, which turns the compressor hum into a rattle. If it does not change anything, that result is still worth recording.

- Empty the ice bin and break up welded ice — Old ice fused into a block jams the ejector and makes noises that sound structural. A clean, empty bin is also a fair test. A result here decides whether the next two checks are worth doing at all.

Read this before touching it
Safety
Power down at the breaker first, and treat the cabinet as live until you have. Stored charge does not drain the instant the supply stops. The sealed side, meaning the compressor, its tubing and the charge inside them, is not owner territory at any level of confidence. Leave the door or lid switch wired exactly as you found it; it is a guard and not an inconvenience.
The line between a fix and a call
Where the owner side ends: noise you can chase with a vacuum and a spanner is owner work, and noise that needs a fan out of the liner is not. That line is about tools and access rather than about confidence. Bring somebody in straight away if the breaker trips when the cabinet starts; repeated tripping is the appliance telling you something has already failed.
