What this usually is
A Craftsman refrigerator that has stopped making ice is usually not broken at all: the arm has been knocked up by a package, or a valve has been closed for other plumbing and never reopened. The checks are ordered so the cheap ones eliminate the expensive ones.
How it presents
- A plug of ice at the back of the maker or in the fill tube — Water is freezing before it reaches the mould, which stops the fill and hides the real cause under ice. Note the result even if it is negative, because a ruled-out cause is progress.
- NEAR MISS: ice is made but tastes or smells wrong — Bad-tasting ice means the maker is working; the water or the bin is what needs attention. Ask whoever else uses the machine whether they have noticed the same thing.
- Ice is fused into a single block — Water reaching the tray between cycles, often from a fill that does not shut cleanly or a cabinet that is not level. It needs nothing you do not already own.
- Production stopped after the filter was changed — Air in the line, or a filter not seated. Both are recoverable without a part. Time it roughly, as the pattern matters more than the exact interval.
What causes it, in order of likelihood
- A frozen fill tube at the back of the maker — Common on any cabinet running slightly cold or with marginal pressure: the last of the water sits in the tube, freezes, and each subsequent fill makes the plug bigger. Ask whoever else uses the machine whether they have noticed the same thing.
- A cabinet that is not level — A tray sitting out of true fills unevenly and spills between cycles, which is what fuses a block of ice together.
- A dispenser flap left partly open — Warm moist air entering the chute refreezes and eventually stops both dispensing and production. Ask whoever else uses the machine whether they have noticed the same thing.
- A freezer compartment that is not cold enough — A maker in a compartment above its working temperature harvests late and produces poorly, which is a cooling fault wearing an ice-maker costume.
How to narrow it down
- Trace the water line from the wall to the back of the cabinet — Look for a closed stop valve, a kink where the cabinet was pushed back, and a line trapped under a foot.
- Fill a glass from the dispenser and watch the flow — A thin or hesitant stream says the restriction is upstream of the maker, in the valve or the filter. A strong stream sends you to the maker instead. Repeat it once if the answer is ambiguous rather than moving on with a maybe.
- Check the filter date and the filter itself — If nobody can remember changing it, that is the answer for now: a filter is the one part in the water path designed to block. A cause in this position is worth eliminating before you spend anything.
What an owner can safely check
- Wash the bin and the mould surround with warm water — Old ice welds itself into a mass that jams the ejector, and a clean bin is also the only way to tell whether new ice is actually being made.

- Purge the line after any filter work — Run several litres through the dispenser into a jug until the flow is steady and clear. Take a photograph before you disturb anything you will have to reassemble.

- Level the cabinet front to back — Adjust the front feet so the cabinet sits slightly back, which stops the tray spilling between fills. Do this before the check below it, because the answer changes what that one means.

What to turn off before you start
Safety
Switch off and unplug before a single fastener comes out. An isolated appliance can still have charge in it, and that is the reason for the pause. A cabinet is heavier than it looks once the door is open; get help rather than walking it alone. Keep every safety switch in circuit, in the state the factory left it.
The handover point
What separates half an hour of your time from a service visit: the water path up to the cabinet is owner work; the machine at the end of it is not. The split is worth respecting even when the part looks simple. Call the same day if the cabinet is warm enough that food is at risk, because the clock on what is inside runs faster than the clock on the repair.
