What this usually is
On a Coyote refrigerator a door complaint is almost always the gasket or the way the door now sits, not the hinge and not the latch: the magnetic seal takes a set where it is folded, loses grip along the hinge edge, and lets a slow stream of room air into the cabinet. That leak shows up as sweating, frost and a compressor that never stops rather than as a door that visibly hangs open. What follows is arranged by likelihood rather than by how interesting each cause is.
What this looks like from the outside
- The door opens under its own weight instead of staying shut — A door that swings back open has lost either level or grip, and both are checkable in a couple of minutes.
- Frost building on one side of the compartment — Frost forms nearest the leak, so the side it builds on tells you which part of the gasket has given up.
- The compressor runs far longer than it used to — Long run times are the cost of the leak showing up on the electricity bill rather than in the ice. Time it roughly, as the pattern matters more than the exact interval.
- One compartment frosts and the other does not — Maps the leak to a single door rather than to the cabinet as a whole. If you can only do one check, make it this one.
Likely causes, ordered
- A twisted or racked door skin — It is the least likely cause and the most expensive, which is exactly why it is checked last rather than first.
- Residue holding the seal off its face — The free cause, and the one to eliminate before any part is considered. Ask whoever else uses the machine whether they have noticed the same thing.
- A gasket that has taken a permanent set — Compressed in one place for years, the rubber stops springing back and no cleaning restores the contact.
- A cabinet moved without being re-levelled — A door that sealed in one position will not necessarily seal in another, and nobody thinks to check. Note whether it happens every time or only sometimes, because that distinction narrows the list.
Where to start, and why there
- Feel along the seal for a cold draught with the machine running — The back of a hand is a sensitive enough instrument for this. If you can only do one check, make it this one.
- Run a hand along the closed door for a cold draught — Escaping cold is easier to feel than entering warmth, and it finds the same leak. The rank is a starting point, not a verdict; what you observe outranks it.
- Check whether the door closes itself from half open — A correctly levelled cabinet does. Note the result even if it is negative, because a ruled-out cause is progress.
The checks worth doing
- Wash the gasket and the cabinet face it meets — Warm soapy water on a cloth, into every fold, then dry it. Sugar and grease in the seal channel stop rubber gripping and also hold it open where it has stuck. Take a photograph before you disturb anything you will have to reassemble.

Safety
Pull the plug before anything else; a wall switch is not proof the appliance is dead. The power being off is not the same as the machine being safe to touch immediately. Refrigerant work is licensed work: a line opened without the right recovery gear vents the charge and turns a repair into a replacement. Work with the door mechanism intact rather than around it.
When to call a technician
The honest boundary is this. If the fix is on the outside of the door you can do it; if it means unbolting the door or fitting a new seal to a warped frame, it is a service call. Crossing it costs more than the visit would have. Do not sit on it if the cabinet is running continuously and never satisfying: a compressor made to work like that turns a cheap fault into an expensive one.
