The quick verdict
On this class of refrigerator a control complaint splits cleanly in two: a panel that is blank or unresponsive, which is usually supply or connector, and a panel that is alive and complaining, which is usually a sensor. Which of the two you have decides everything that follows. Read the near-miss line in the symptoms first if you are not sure you are on the right page.
Signs, including the misleading ones
- The display is blank but the cabinet is still cooling — A working machine with a dead face is a connection story most of the time.
- Buttons that do nothing or respond to the wrong press — Membrane or touch-panel wear, or moisture behind the fascia, both of which fail gradually and get worse in a warm kitchen. If the answer is clear, stop here and act on it.
- The panel resets itself or flickers — Flicker and spontaneous resets point at power quality or a loose connection. Check whether anything changed in the house around the time it started.
- Settings that will not hold overnight — Either the board is losing its memory, or a demonstration or showroom mode is active and overriding what you set.
The ranking
- A temperature sensor out of range or open circuit — Ranked first because sensors fail far more often than the boards that read them, and because the code usually names which one.
- A latched fault state the board will not leave on its own — Ranked here because it costs nothing to test: controllers can hold an error until conditions clear, and a power cycle from cold is what resets them. Ask whoever else uses the machine whether they have noticed the same thing.
- A door switch that has stopped reporting — It ranks here because one cheap switch can make a machine look thoroughly confused.
- A failed main control board — Last. Boards do fail, and this is the expensive answer, which is exactly why it is the answer you arrive at after the others have been eliminated rather than the one you start with. Ask whoever else uses the machine whether they have noticed the same thing.

- Cut the power for a few minutes, then restore it — Breaker off or plug out. If the answer is clear, stop here and act on it.
- Press every button in turn and note which respond — A pattern, such as one region dead or a neighbour responding instead, points at the membrane rather than the logic.
- Look for a demonstration or showroom mode in the manual — It exists on many cabinets, it makes a machine light up without cooling, and it gets switched on by accident more often than anyone expects. If you can only do one check, make it this one.
