The short answer
A Costway FP Refrigerator that hums but does not get cold is telling you heat is not leaving the cabinet, not that it has stopped trying. The useful split on the Costway FP refrigerator family is between heat that cannot get out at the condenser and cold that cannot get in from the evaporator, and those two are separable by touch and by sound in a couple of minutes.
What you see on the FP family
- The cabinet is warm but the unit is clearly running — The compressor hum is there and the air inside is not cold.
- The compressor runs continuously and never cycles off — It is working and never reaching its setpoint, which is the same fault seen from the other side.
- Frost sheeting on the back wall of the freezer compartment — A sheet rather than the usual light dusting means the defrost cycle has stalled and airflow is being blocked by ice.
- The back or the sides of the cabinet are unusually hot — Heat that cannot leave at the condenser stays in the cabinet metal, and a blocked coil feels exactly like this.
Causes, most likely first on the FP family
- Evaporator frosted over and a stalled defrost cycle — Ranked first on the FP family — A warm cabinet with a heavy frost sheet behind it is this fault and nothing else, and on these models it is the second most common call. Ice builds on the evaporator faster than the defrost cycle can clear it, and once the fin pack is blocked the air stops moving even though the compressor keeps running.
- Door seal, door alignment or a door left ajar — Second — and worth a paper-strip test before anything comes apart because it costs nothing and it is genuinely common. A gasket that has hardened or a door held open by a shelf lets warm room air in continuously.
- Condenser coil and the airflow around it — Third — always near the top because it is free to fix and it is the cause that builds up invisibly over years. The coil sheds the heat pulled out of the cabinet, and it does that through dust, pet hair and whatever is stacked against the back or the grille.
- Evaporator fan, thermostat or the sealed system — Fourth — and deliberately: it is the least likely group and the only one that is not owner work on any refrigerator. A failed evaporator fan leaves the cold where it is made.
- Body: The order below follows the shared parts rather than the differences — the stems in the FP family carry the same running gear and diverge at the cabinet — which is why the top of this list is not where the brand-generic article puts it.
Check in this order, and why
- 1. Listen at the freezer for the evaporator fan — Open the freezer and listen with the door switch held.
- 2. Look at the freezer rear wall for a frost sheet — A solid sheet means the defrost cycle has stalled.
- 3. Test the door seal with a strip of paper — Close the door on it and pull. If it slides out freely the gasket is not sealing at that point.
- Body: The stems in the FP family share their layout, so the order below holds across the table; where a stem differs it differs at the cabinet, not at the part you are reaching for.

When to call a technician
Call once the condenser is clean, the doors seal, there is no frost sheet and the cabinet is still warm — at that point it is the fan, the control or the sealed system, and none of those is owner work on these models.
