Before the detail
On a Commercial Cool freezer the ice maker has its own switch and its own arm, and both get knocked by a package. Check those before anything else, because they cost nothing and they explain a real share of these. Nothing below asks you to open anything that should stay closed.
The observables
- No ice at all and the tray is dry — No water is arriving, which puts the fault on the supply side. Give it a moment rather than glancing; the thing you are looking for is not always obvious.
- Hollow or small cubes — Water is arriving but not enough of it, usually a restricted line or a partly closed valve. Keep an eye on whether it is getting worse, because the rate of change is itself evidence.
- A single frozen block instead of cubes — A slow leak into the tray between cycles, or a fill that does not stop cleanly. If you can only do one check, make it this one.
- NEAR MISS: water on the floor and no ice — That is a leak, and the water-leak page takes priority over this one. Keep an eye on whether it is getting worse, because the rate of change is itself evidence.
Causes, most likely first
- A closed or partly closed supply valve — Second because the valve gets closed for other plumbing work and forgotten, and it produces a completely dry tray. Ask whoever else uses the machine whether they have noticed the same thing.
- A blocked or long-overdue water filter — A restricted filter starves the fill, which is what produces hollow and undersized cubes. Where two causes look alike from the outside, this is the one that is more often right.
- A kinked supply line behind the appliance — Common after the appliance has been pushed back into place, and invisible from the front. Ask whoever else uses the machine whether they have noticed the same thing.
- A failed inlet valve or ice-maker module — Last, because every cause above is cheaper to eliminate and produces the same empty bin. This is the cause people skip, and skipping it is why the diagnosis takes three visits.
Where to start, and why there
- Check the ice maker switch and the shut-off arm — Both are inside the cabinet and both stop production silently when they are wrong. It is placed here on how often it turns up, not on how serious it would be.
- Check the age of the water filter — A filter well past its interval restricts flow enough to affect cube size. It is the sort of check a technician does first, for the same reason.
- Look behind the appliance for a kinked line — Pull it forward gently and follow the line from the valve to the connection. It is placed here on how often it turns up, not on how serious it would be.
What to try before calling anyone
- Switch the ice maker on and lower the arm — Make sure no package is holding the arm up, then leave it a few hours before judging anything. This is the cheapest information available on the machine.

- Open the supply valve fully — Find the valve that feeds the appliance and open it completely rather than partly. Stop if anything about it feels wrong rather than pressing on.

Power, water and hands
Safety
Power down at the breaker first, and treat the cabinet as live until you have. Stored charge does not drain the instant the supply stops. Never put a heat source close to plastic parts or the gasket while you are thawing ice. Leave the door or lid switch wired exactly as you found it; it is a guard and not an inconvenience.
The handover point
Stop and call when the picture changes: the switch, the arm, the valve, the filter and the line are yours; the inlet valve, the module and the heater are not. The split is worth respecting even when the part looks simple. Do not sit on it if the cabinet is running continuously and never satisfying: a compressor made to work like that turns a cheap fault into an expensive one.
