When a Commercial Cool freezer stops holding, check what changed. A door caught on a package, a vent blocked by a full load, or a defrost that has stopped working all produce the same slow warming. Read the near-miss line in the symptoms first if you are not sure you are on the right page.
Signs, including the misleading ones
- Heavy frost on the back wall of the cabinet — The defrost function has stopped clearing, and the frost itself then blocks the airflow. Time it roughly, as the pattern matters more than the exact interval.
- The motor runs almost continuously — The appliance is working hard and losing ground, which points at insulation, seals or airflow. It needs nothing you do not already own.
- Frost building on packages rather than on the walls — Warm moist air is getting in, which is a door and seal question. Write it down before anybody comes out; a described symptom is worth more than a remembered one.
- One part of the cabinet is warmer than the rest — Airflow rather than cooling: a vent blocked by a package will do exactly this. Do this before the check below it, because the answer changes what that one means.
The ranking
- Frost or packages blocking the internal vents — First because loading a freezer full is normal behaviour and because the vents are easy to block without noticing. It is placed here on how often it turns up, not on how serious it would be.
- A defrost function that has stopped — Frost builds on the cooling surface until air cannot pass it, and the cabinet warms even though the appliance is running. That single observation eliminates more of the list than any amount of guessing.
- A thermostat or sensor reading wrongly — The appliance behaves consistently with a wrong number, which is why the reading and the reality disagree. This is the cause people skip, and skipping it is why the diagnosis takes three visits.
- A sealed-system fault — Last, because it is the least common and the most expensive, and because everything above it must be eliminated first. That single observation eliminates more of the list than any amount of guessing.
The elimination order
- Put a thermometer in the cabinet overnight — It converts an impression into a measurement, and it is what decides whether there is a fault at all. Repeat it once if the answer is ambiguous rather than moving on with a maybe.
- Check the door closes fully against the seal — Run a hand round the closed door for a cold draught, and look for a package holding it open.
- Look at the condenser coils at the back or underneath — Dust is visible and it is the most common maintenance omission in this appliance class. Do it with the machine in its normal state rather than after you have already changed something.

- Place a thermometer in the middle of the cabinet and leave it overnight — Do not judge by the food. Read it in the morning before opening the door for anything else. Leave the machine a few minutes afterwards before you decide it has not helped.

Power off first. Everything else on this page assumes you have done it. Treat the wiring as live until you have proved otherwise, whatever the switch says. Water and electricity meet at the defrost drain on this class of appliance, so dry the floor before you kneel on it. Nothing here asks you to interfere with a switch that senses the door, and nothing should.
When to stop and call
The honest boundary is this. If cleaning, defrosting and reloading fix it, the job is done; a sealed-system fault is a service call and often a replacement decision. Past that point, a wrong guess is expensive rather than merely annoying. Do not sit on it if the cabinet is running continuously and never satisfying: a compressor made to work like that turns a cheap fault into an expensive one.
