Diagnose noise by location
A Commercial Cool freezer makes several noises by design: refrigerant gurgling, defrost water trickling, controls ticking and a hum whenever the compressor runs. Set those aside with confidence and concentrate on three: a fan clipping frost, a relay clicking without a start, and a hum that has deepened as the cabinet has warmed. What you actually observe
- Rattle you can stop by pressing the cabinet side — A panel or line resonating. Press gently at several points while it runs to find it.
- Noise that comes and goes through the day — Typical of an unlevel cabinet touching a wall as it expands and contracts.
- Grinding from underneath — The tray, a fan blade, or something that has dropped into the compressor compartment.
- Knocking as it starts and stops — The compressor rocking on its mounts. Worth watching rather than worrying about.
- NEAR MISS — popping from the liner after the lid is opened — Plastic expanding with temperature. Harmless and universal.
Causes, most likely first on the CCUK line
- Installation — Ranked first: feet never wound out, a sloping garage floor, or a cabinet wedged between a wall and a shelf. Free to fix and instantly obvious once found.
- Frost against a moving part — Second. On a cabinet that has been leaking air past its seal, the frost eventually reaches something that turns.
- Loose parts underneath — Third. Visible with a torch once the unit is unplugged and pulled out.
- Mechanical failure in the sealed system — Last and least likely, but the one to act on when a deepening hum arrives with a warming cabinet.

- Open the door or lid while it is happening — Fan noise from inside stops when the door switch cuts the fan. That is a complete diagnosis for nothing.
- Check level and clearance — A spirit level, the adjustable feet, and a hand between the cabinet and whatever stands next to it.
- Look at the tray and underneath with the plug out — Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
