Straight answer first

These are compact machines with a small pump and a drain line that must climb, which leaves very little margin when anything narrows. Only when the path is proven clear does the pump itself become the suspect.
What the owner sees and hears
- A clatter from the pump area — Retrieve it before restarting: running it longer chips the impeller.
- A buzzing from the base with no flow — Stop the machine rather than letting it grind on.
- A smell from the drum or filter — Clearing the filter deals with both.
- Standing water at the end of the cycle — The machine will usually refuse to spin as well, because it will not spin on a full drum.
