The compressor is the least probable source of a new noise, despite being the loudest thing in the unit. The sequence below sorts normal operating noise from a genuine fault. On this kind of cabinet this is a high-volume budget line from a major maker, so the design is conventional and the wear points are the conventional ones.
What you actually observe
- NEAR MISS — the noise came with the unit warming up — Then the noise is secondary; work the cooling-failure page, since the problem is airflow or defrost.
- A grinding or scraping that rises and falls — A fan blade catching ice or a worn bearing; the sound tracks the fan and not the compressor.
- A buzzing or humming that changes when the freezer door opens — That is the circulation fan being switched by the door — the most diagnostic observation available.
- Cracking and popping after the unit has been quiet — Plastic and metal moving as temperatures change; normal in every frost-free cabinet.
Likely causes in order
- Evaporator fan blade catching frost or a bent shroud — Ranked first: A ridge of ice growing on the shroud is the most common source of a new grinding noise, and it appears with the defrost fault that caused it. It sits at the top here since this is a high-volume budget line from a major maker, so the design is conventional and the wear points are the conventional ones.
- Condenser fan obstructed or bearing worn — Second: It is reachable without opening anything sealed, which is why it is checked before the compressor is ever suspected.
- Cabinet not level or resting on an uneven floor — Third: A cabinet standing on three feet drums against the floor every time the compressor starts, and it sounds far worse than it is.
Check in this order, and why
- Rock the unit gently corner to corner — Any movement means it is standing on three feet, and that alone can produce a drumming rattle.
- Check the unit has clearance at the back and above — A unit boxed into a recess runs hot and imitates a failing system, so this is eliminated before anything is opened.
- Pull the unit out and look behind it with a torch — Tubing touching the shell, a displaced pan or a toy under the unit all show themselves immediately.

- Clear the lower grille and the condenser fan area — Unplug first, then vacuum the grille and remove anything that has fallen behind it.

Before you open anything
Safety
Power off at the breaker or at the plug first. A capacitor keeps a charge after the power is off, so treat the compressor terminals as energised until you have confirmed otherwise. Nothing in the sealed circuit is an owner job: it is pressurised, and the law treats venting it as a violation in its own right.
When this stops being DIY
Book a visit if the sound is accompanied by the unit losing temperature: the noise is then a symptom and the cooling loss is the job. Levelling, cleaning and clearing obstructions are owner work; replacing a fan motor is not. A fault that is getting worse week by week is worth booking now rather than after it has taken something else with it.
