The short answer
When ice production drops off, look at the fill side and the freezer temperature before the module is condemned. Everything short of replacing a valve is work you can do yourself in an afternoon. On this kind of cabinet this is a high-volume budget line from a major maker, so the design is conventional and the wear points are the conventional ones.
The signs, and the near misses
- Cubes are fused into one lump in the bin — Usually the bin has been left long enough between uses for the surface to melt and reknit.
- NEAR MISS — water dispenses but ice never forms — A supply that works at the dispenser and not at the mould narrows this to the ice-maker fill branch specifically.
- Water pools under the ice maker and freezes there — Overfill or a misaligned fill cup, which eventually blocks the mould itself.
- The ice maker arm or sensor keeps parking in the off position — A bin arm knocked upward by a bag of frozen food stops production instantly and silently.
The ranking that matters
- Fill tube frozen solid at the mould end — Ranked first: A slightly slow valve leaves a drop behind after each fill, and the drop freezes at the coldest point of the tube until the path is closed. It sits at the top here since this is a high-volume budget line from a major maker, so the design is conventional and the wear points are the conventional ones.
- Water inlet valve failing to open fully — Second: Valves on this class of cabinet are the part that ages out first; a partly-open valve gives small hollow cubes instead of none at all.
- Bin arm or optical sensor reading "full" — Third: This costs nothing to check and explains a unexpected share of the calls that end with no part fitted.
The diagnostic order
- Look for a plug of ice in the fill tube above the mould — A torch and a warm cloth will show and clear it; a plug found here explains the entire failure.
- Run a hand along the door seal line with the door shut — Cold air escaping at a point is felt before it is seen, and it explains several unrelated-looking complaints.
- Fill a glass at the dispenser if the freezer has one — A strong steady flow at the dispenser and no ice at the mould narrows the problem to the ice-maker branch of the water path.
Safe checks, step by step
- Clean the inlet screen at the valve — Only with the water off and the line drained; sediment on the screen is a common and completely reversible restriction.

- Confirm nothing is leaning on the bin arm or the sensor eye — Reposition frozen packets away from the ice maker and wipe a frosted sensor window clear.

- Hand-fill the mould to test the freeze and harvest cycle — A measured cup of water, then leave it alone for some hours and come back to see whether cubes have dropped.

Safety
Kill the power first, at the outlet or at the panel, and keep it killed while a cover is off; capacitors store energy after the supply is gone. The refrigerant circuit stays sealed: it is pressurised, it is brazed, and an amateur opening is both a hazard and a reportable release. Nothing in the sealed circuit is an owner job: it is pressurised, and the law treats venting it as a violation in its own right.
When this stops being DIY
Call once the mould freezes hand-poured water but the valve still will not fill it: that is a valve or harness diagnosis, and it is made with a meter on an unplugged appliance. Anything that smells of burning, trips a breaker or leaves scorch marks is a stop-now condition instead of a diagnosis to continue.
