The short answer
A leak is a drainage problem far more often than a supply problem. That puts a blocked or frozen defrost drain at the top of the list here and a drain trough or gutter blocked above the drain hole at the bottom.
What the machine is doing
- Water pooling inside, under the crisper drawers — The classic blocked defrost drain.
- Water at the front edge under the door — Typically an overflowing drain pan path or a door that is not sealing.
- NEAR MISS — condensation on the outside of the doors — Usually humidity rather than a fault; the inside is what matters.
The ranking
- A blocked or frozen defrost drain — The most common leak on any refrigerator. Drainage is where water that the machine made on purpose goes wrong, so it leads whenever water is the complaint.
- A door seal letting humid air in — Warm air meeting cold surfaces condenses. A cabinet that sweats internally is often reporting a gasket fault as a leak. Ranked high because the door is the part built to the lower cost on a sub-line cabinet, so it deserves the check the electronics do not.
- Humidity beyond what the cabinet can manage — In a humid garage or an unconditioned room, condensation appears on and in a perfectly healthy unit. The surroundings are part of the machine: rate it against warmer air and the same hardware behaves like a failing unit.
- An unusually humid room — Garages and unconditioned rooms put far more water through the evaporator than the drain was designed to carry.
- A drain trough or gutter blocked above the drain hole — Water sheets sideways before it reaches the drain and then runs into the cabinet.
Check in this order, and why
- Ask whether a filter was changed recently — A filter head is the most common leak after any maintenance.
- Look at the freezer floor for a flat sheet of ice — It is the frozen version of the same blocked drain.
- Dry the floor and lay paper towel under the front and the rear — Where the paper wets first tells you which end the water comes from.
The owner-side procedure
- Flush the defrost drain from inside the cabinet — Find the drain opening at the back of the cabinet floor and flush it with warm water until it runs freely.
Tools: warm water, turkey baster or syringe
- Thaw a frozen drain rather than forcing it — Empty the freezer, switch the unit off and leave the doors open until the ice is gone.

- STOP before removing the rear panel to reach the drain trough — A drain heater or a trough behind the evaporator means a panel and live terminals. That is a technician job.
Read this before touching the machine
Safety
Dry the floor before plugging anything back in, and keep power leads and extension blocks out of any puddle. Unplug the cabinet before pulling it out over a wet floor; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
When to stop and call
Flushing the drain is the owner repair. A cracked liner, a failed pan or a supply-line fitting is a technician job, and a water line under pressure is one to shut off first.
