What this usually is
Before a board is condemned on a Chill by Hisense refrigerator, two things have to be true: the machine is not in a mode, and the sensors it steers by are telling the truth. That puts a lock, demo or showroom mode at the top of the list here and a damper motor that has lost position at the bottom.
What the machine is doing
- Buttons do nothing, or the panel is locked — A control lock is a feature on most units and it is engaged by accident constantly.
- The display is dark but the cabinet is cold — A display fault on a working machine. Annoying, and much cheaper than the alternative.
- NEAR MISS — the panel is completely dead and nothing runs — That is a no-power fault, and the supply is checked before anything else.
What causes this, in order of likelihood here
- A lock, demo or showroom mode — Every modern cabinet has at least one. Electronics are checked here because a mode or a lock imitates a dead machine and costs nothing to clear.
- A temperature sensor that has drifted — A sensor that reads warm makes the unit run forever; one that reads cold makes it stop early. The sensors come from the parent platform and they drift rather than fail, which is why the machine keeps running while it stops being right.
- A defrost sensor or bimetal reporting wrongly — It makes the machine skip or shorten defrost, and the first visible sign is a code rather than ice. Sensors drift rather than fail, so they are considered before the board they feed.
- A damper motor that has lost position — One compartment then runs to its own rules regardless of what the panel is set to.
What to check first, second, third
- Pull the power for a few minutes and let the control reboot — One clean reset separates a stuck state from a real fault. A symptom that returns is real.
- Ask whether the symptom started after a power event — An outage, a storm or a generator switchover in the days before the fault is genuine diagnostic evidence.
- Cycle the door open and closed with the alarm sounding — Many alarms need a door cycle to clear once the condition has gone.
The checks you can do without a meter
- Clear any lock and exit demo mode — Work through the panel sequences for your unit before anything else.
- Do one clean power-down reset — Unplug or switch off the breaker for a few minutes, restore power and let the control settle before judging it.
- Check the door alarm behaves correctly with each door — It tests both switches without any tools at all.
- STOP before opening the control housing — Sensors and boards are tested with a meter on live terminals behind a panel. That is where an owner check ends.

Safety
Unplug the unit before any panel or control housing is opened — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not silence a temperature alarm and walk away: the alarm is usually right, and the food is the thing at risk.
The line between a fix and a service call
A cabinet that is both complaining and warm is a food-safety problem before it is a repair problem: move the food, then call. A cabinet that is complaining and cold can wait for a scheduled visit.
