What you are most likely looking at
A machine that will not drain has something in the way: the filter, the hose or the standpipe. All three are reachable without dismantling anything. That puts a blocked pump filter at the top of the list here and a jammed pump impeller at the bottom.
How this presents
- Water standing in the drum at the end of the cycle — The pump could not clear it, or the hose could not take it.
- The machine will not spin — Machines refuse to spin with water in the drum, so a drain fault reads as a spin fault.
- Water backs up out of the standpipe — The house drain is the restriction, not the machine.
- NEAR MISS — water on the floor rather than in the drum — That is a leak and it has its own page.
Causes, most likely first on this unit
- A blocked pump filter — Behind a small hatch at the bottom front on most machines. Coins, buttons and lint collect there until nothing passes. The pump and the drain path are the parts that meet everything that comes off the laundry, so they are the parts that block.
- A kinked or blocked drain hose — Crushed behind the machine or blocked with a lint plug where it narrows. Drainage is where water that the machine made on purpose goes wrong, so it leads whenever water is the complaint.
- A blocked standpipe or house drain — If water backs up out of the pipe, the restriction is in the house rather than in the machine. Imported machines are frequently self-installed, and a machine that was never levelled or was pushed back onto its own hose carries that fault forever.
- A drain hose at the wrong height — Too low and the machine siphons; too high and the pump cannot lift the water.
- A jammed pump impeller — The pump hums and nothing moves. Usually a coin or an underwire.
What to check first, second, third
- Open the pump filter hatch at the bottom front — Have a shallow tray and towels ready — there will be water.
- Pull the machine out and look at the drain hose — A crush behind the machine is the commonest install fault.
- Pour water down the standpipe with the machine off — If it backs up, the house drain is the problem.
- Listen during the drain for a hum with no flow — That separates a jam from a dead pump.
The checks you can do without a meter
- Drain the machine through the filter hatch — Lay towels, open the small drain spout first, then remove the filter itself.

- Clean the filter and feel inside the housing — Turn the impeller by hand and remove anything hard you find.

- Straighten the drain hose and set its height as the manual states — It must rise to the stated height before dropping into the standpipe.
- STOP before removing the pump or the sump hose — That means tipping a plumbed machine and working next to mains wiring.
Read this before touching the machine
Safety
Unplug the machine before opening the pump filter — the hatch sits directly below the mains-wired cabinet and there will be water. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
When to call a technician
Filters, hoses and heights are yours. A pump, a sump hose or a control fault is service work; a blocked house drain is a plumber.
