The short answer
Start with something loose in the drum or the blower: on a Care compact vented dryer it accounts for more of these than anything else, and worn drum rollers or glides is the next thing to rule out. A compact vented dryer runs from an ordinary household outlet and pushes its warm damp air out through a hose that the owner usually routes themselves. What you observe
- A rumble or rattle that follows the drum — Drum speed rather than motor speed is the clue.
- Nothing happens at all when you press start — Start at the door switch and the outlet.

Causes, most likely first on this brand
- Something loose in the drum or the blower — The likeliest cause on this brand: a coin that has left a pocket ends up in the blower housing, where it produces a hard rattle at exactly drum speed and nothing else does.
- Worn drum rollers or glides — Next most likely: the drum rides on rollers or felt pads, and as they wear they produce a rumble that rises with the drum rather than with the motor.
- A worn or slipping belt — Third on the list: a belt at the end of its life squeals on start-up or lets the drum stop turning while the motor runs on.
- A machine standing unevenly — Least likely, and the only one that is not your work: a dryer that rocks on its feet drums against the floor every rotation, and a compact machine standing on a worktop does it loudly.

- Run it empty for a minute and listen — A coin in the blower rattles at drum speed and nothing else sounds like it.
- Listen for whether the rumble follows the drum — Rising with the drum rather than the motor names the rollers.
- Check whether the drum actually turns while the motor runs — A motor running with a still drum is a belt and nothing else.

Unplug the dryer before clearing the vent hose or opening the lint housing; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never exhaust a vented dryer into the room it stands in, and never run it with the filter removed - lint reaching the heater is how dryers catch fire. If yours is a gas model and you smell gas: leave the building without touching any switch, and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside.
When to call a technician
Call when the drum is empty, the machine sits solid and a rumble or squeal remains. A squeal on start-up and a rumble that rises with the drum are both inside the cabinet, and on a compact machine that is a service call rather than an owner job.
