What you are most likely looking at
Touch controls on a cooktop live under spills and hot pans, and most faults trace to that environment rather than to the electronics behind it. That puts liquid or a pan on the touch area at the top of the list here and an unsuitable or misplaced pan on an induction zone at the bottom.
What you observe
- The panel does not respond to touch — A control lock, or liquid sitting on the glass.
- Beeping with no zone selected — Liquid or a pan on the control area.
- NEAR MISS — the whole cooktop is dead — That is a supply question rather than a control one.
What causes this, in order of likelihood here
- Liquid or a pan on the touch area — Touch controls read a spill as a finger. A boil-over across the panel produces beeping, dead controls or zones changing on their own. It comes first on a built-in because the electronics are the only part of the machine an owner can observe without pulling the appliance out of its cabinet.
- A control lock or child lock — Engaged accidentally, it makes a working cooktop look completely dead. It is cleared from the panel. Electronics are checked here because a mode or a lock imitates a dead machine and costs nothing to clear.
- Thermal protection cutting a zone — The cooktop reduces or stops power when the glass or the electronics run too hot — with a pan boiled dry, or a blocked vent underneath. Sensor-rich platforms fail sensor-first: a thermistor that drifts rather than opens makes the machine behave oddly while every part of it still works.
- An unsuitable or misplaced pan on an induction zone — Induction needs a ferrous base and enough contact area; the wrong pan reads as no pan and the zone shuts down.
The order of checks
- Wipe the whole glass dry and try again — A film of liquid across the touch area explains most of these instantly.
- Look for a lock symbol and hold the lock key — Free, instant, and a common answer.
- Note whether the fault follows heavy or prolonged use — A zone dropping out after long high-power cooking is thermal protection working.

- Clean and dry the glass completely, including the control area — Use a hob cleaner rather than a wet cloth, then dry it.

Cleaning, locks, pan choice and ventilation are yours. Anything under the glass is service work, and a cracked surface or a zone that will not turn off means isolating the circuit now.
